Kato SD70MAC and Sergent

I have a Kato SD70MAC that is currently equipped with Sergent Couplers. Unfortunatly, the couplers sit high and the cars will not remain coupled over elevation changes on the layout. Any hints or suggestions I can take to lower them?

Shave off the existing coupler box,a and install a kadee one with shims to lower it a bit.
