Model Railroading > Athearn GP50 shell on Atlas frame?Date: 10/29/10 11:20 Athearn GP50 shell on Atlas frame? Author: ns6669sd60 Has anybody ever done this modification and is it possible? I was thinking of using a GP40/40-2 frame and motor, would that be the right one? Any pictures that might help me make it work?
Thanks, Mike Date: 10/29/10 12:00 Re: Athearn GP50 shell on Atlas frame? Author: bnsfsd70 With that in mind, I wonder why I haven't seen anyone use a Proto 2000 GP60 as a start for a Geep 50 yet. Surely, that shell is of higher quality than the Athearn GP50.

So it would not necessarly be a better starting point to make a GP50. Dave Hussey Date: 10/29/10 15:00 Re: Athearn GP50 shell on Atlas frame? Author: drolsen While I haven't tried this conversion, I would guess that the biggest problem you'll have is that the Athearn shell is fairly thick compared to the Atlas shell, so you'll have to either thin the insides of the GP50 shell, narrow the Atlas weights, or remove the weights and replace them with something else. The thick stepwells, or the ends of the frame, might also need some trimming to fit.
