Athearn new release UPS trailers
Author: Matt_SD40T-2

Someone please tell me that the $22.98 includes two trailers for the new HO Athearn UPS 28' and 40' drop trailers. Usually Athearn always includes two trailers for that price, but it's not clear for these trailers:

Unfortunately, I believe you only get 1 for thr price. UPS MUST be getting well paid for permission to use their name.

UPS is VERY protective of their name and image.

At that price, UPS will not exist in my model rail kingdom.

...just as there is no UP. LOL

You figure at $22.98 per 28ft UPS trailer X 3 = $68.94. Add an Athearn "Triple 28" 89ft flatcar @ $39.98 = $108.92.

If you wanted to make a train up with about 20 cars with this configuration, you will spend $2178.40!!!!! This does not even include tax! Forget it if you want to incorporate those 20 pig flats with other "spine" type cars to make a righteous BNSF pig train. Damn!

This also doesn't include a reasonable street discount. I reserved my F89-F flats for $29 each, which is 25% off. I expect to get my UPS trailers (when they do the earlier scheme) for about the same discount. While I realize these cars and trailers are still expensive, it just doesn't make sense to talk about spending MSRP on them as a "shock and awe" tactic.

I'm sure there's a hefty licensing fee, just as there must have been for all the John Deere stuff Athearn did.

Yeah, $23 list (or $18 discounted) is a bit steep for one trailer. Fortunately for me, the 28-footers have the new UPS logo, which I don't want. But I'll probably suck it up and get the 40-footers for my circa-1990 trailer train -- and get the 28s when they come out with older lettering -- figuring that my train will also have lots of other intermodal trailers on it that won't cost so much. I already have some of the Walthers pup kits with the "mix-and-match" decals, plus the no-name UPSZ trailers Athearn did a couple of years ago, so I won't be spending thousands of dollars here.

As for the anti-UP bias, get over it. Union Pacific dropped the premium and models of UP locos and rolling stock no longer cost more than other road names.

...so far I've survived without any UPS trailers on my pig trains, I think I can continue to survive. Athearn's trailers are certainly the current cream of the crop in terms of paint and detail, I've got numerous of their 53 footers being used on my trailer train, but they were less than 14 bucks per pair, this asking price for one UPS is a deal breaker for me, and seemingly, others as well...

Regardless if it makes sense or not, prices are still way too high. These are prices that are listed, and there are enough hobby shops that sell at MSRP. We all know of the discounters as well. Shock and awe tactics? Not at all. It is what it is.

You don't make sense! First you complain about high prices, then you say to buy at MSRP. Crazy!

If you READ what I typed, you will see I NEVER said to buy at MSRP. I said there are hobby shops that do in fact sell at MSRP.

It seems to me, sir , that you don't make sense. Get it straight.

Can you say like everyone in the model railroad club buy one to make a train?

Then why mention it if you aren't paying those prices. Could it be like the other poster said
"it just doesn't make sense to talk about spending MSRP on them as a
"shock and awe" tactic. "

Peter, it's just an observation. Get over it. I just made note of how much the trailers and flatcars cost based on the info listed. Chill out man.

One thing that I don't get, is how can a company have a trademark on a color. I don't know if this is Athearns wording, or UPS's, but I think they are offbased when the say "the color brown" are trademarks.

I think they actually made a "new" UPS Brown that they trademarked; it isn't just any Brown. I think it goes by that name.
