First Run Athearn Genesis SD70M's

I have three first run Athearn SD70M's that I finally got around to putting decoders in. Today, I noticed that each of them draw between 1/4 and 1/2 amp and sometimes more. I have NCE D13SRJ's in them.

So, did these early run models have motors with a higher amperage draw than later ones?

I believe the motors in the early sd70m are different then what Athearn uses now and they did draw more.
