Prototype for Athearn BB hopper?
Author: pennsy3750

Is/was there a specific prototype for the Athearn steam-era hopper? This is the 4-bay car with offset sides. I have a few lying around that I'd like to try and rebuild into better-looking renditions of prototype cars.

I've tried Googling; I get a lot of results for 2- and 3-bay cars but nothing on 4-bay ones.

TIA

ARA, 70 Ton hopper, ca. 1926.

I had posted a link here, but deleted it because I think it is prohibited. Do a google search of "prototype for Athearn Quad Hopper" and 2 or 3 sites pop up that talk about it.

The Milwaukee Road had some good matches from the 1930s which lasted into the late 1960s at least.

There's NO WAY that this is a Western Maryland car. They had neither offset side cars nor quads, regardless of what lettering Athearn decided to put on the cars.
