The NRE Genset locomotive has been in regular production since 2006, with over 180 units produced to date. Gensets are marketed as low-emission, reduced fuel consumption locomotives and tend to operate in metropolitan areas where air pollution is a concern. Power for these locomotives is generated by 2 or 3 independent diesel engines which produce 700 hp each. These engines engage and disengage as more or less horsepower is required.

This model includes all new body tooling and represents the next phase of NRE Genset production, unofficially referred to as the "Genset II". The primary spotting feature is a redesigned long hood which is now includes a provision for dynamic brakes. The low nose is now noticeably shorter, due to the cab being positioned farther forward on the frame.

Good thing I spent God knows how many hours rebuilding one of the old Gensets into one of "these." Once I get some sunlight tomorrow, I'll take some shots of my BRC unit to post here. It doesn't matter though, as mine will still be nicer than this one.

On the upside, this saves me the hassle of bending the handrails myself.

...but are they going to do both headlight arrangements? One half of the roads they're doing have the lights over the cab with the remainder in the nose. If you wish to accurately do the BNSF units they've listed road numbers for, you've got some homework to do, as all the lights are in the wrong locations. Numbers 1293 and 1294 both have nose lights with ditch lights above the anticlimber...

Gorgeous gee-whiz model of a totally ugly locomotive. Wish they'd do a similar quality U25C, and offer scale handrails for all their earlier locomotives. === === = === JLH

Ugly is relative -- and almost always interesting. Nicely done model, Atlas!

And props for offering the handrail retrofits -- sometimes they do hear us, and this is good. :-)

I may be in a minority but I like the appearance of the beast! I suspect some color other than that gawd-awful red primerish-looking color may help folks' perceptions of the beast. Now to see my local pusher about ordering one! (BTW -- don't tell my CFO!)

We enjoy modeling what we saw growing up. Today's kids see
these engines now. Some people keep harping that we want
the youth to enter the hobby. I think Atlas will be releasing
successive runs of this Genset for many years to come.

I'm sure the next Genset will look butt uglier. Then we will look
back to the good old days when NRE knew how to design a
good looking engine...

Well looks like another unit to order, lol I like the Demo unit. I do remember seeing the CSX unit not to long ago.

Is there a provision to add sound to thus unit?
I could not find a parts diagram on the Atlas website for instructions and/or a
parts diagram.
Is it possible to put a speaker in the fuel tank area?

The only sound decoder I know of built for this unit is from MRC. Reviews are mixed. You can see and hear them on Youtube.

Ugly engines are good patterns for fine models.

I think that's a great point, Larry. I see a lot of complaints from "old timers" about Amtrak compared to the streamliners of the "Golden Age," but Amtrak is what a lot of today's modelers grew up with, and it may be their only real physical contact with trains. Offering contemporary modelers will appeal to people who want to model what they see. For me personally, I know that CSX isn't everyone's favorite prototype railroad, but that's what I remember from my first real railfanning experiences in the '90s, so that's what I enjoy modeling.

I have to confess that I think it's a neat-looking diesel. It still retains some of the "classic" EMD look around the nose and cab, compared with all the safety cabs that are filling up prototype diesel rosters these days. I'm almost tempted to get one, if I hadn't sworn off modeling outside my 1998 era.
