Model Railroading > Hi-Tech details PS-1 Hy-cubeDate: 11/30/12 17:02 Hi-Tech details PS-1 Hy-cube Author: rschonfelder I am just wondering if anyone has built these kits and used the opportunity to do them better than "as delivered"? (ie. as tooled).
I find the cars sit too high with the trucks, once mounted, look like something Tyco would do in the 60ies. While on the subject of trucks, can anyone recommend the correct trucks to put under? They provide the friction bearing Accurail truck which, itself, is a nice truck but not correct for the cars I am doing. I was thinking that Kadee might have something but also was looking at the Genesis roller bearing trucks. I am going to mill down the inside top lengthwise lip of the floor to allow the body to drop lower onto the underframe piece. I have already milled off their hideous coupler pocket and will be putting on Moloco's product. Apart from the variations that i am doing, this kit is a great addition to the fleet as the body assembles into a very nice car. I like putting together flat kits and they have made three road names available in CB&Q, D&RGW and Milwaukee Road plus the undec. Microscale does the decals for these cars including NP's variation. ICG decals are available privately but I cannot recall the fellow's name. [I always think it is Dan Fogelberg but it isn't him.] These cars ran all over the USA in the late 60ies and into the 70ies carrying appliances ... I call it a "Refrigerator car". Rick Also to mention, there are great shots of these cars in the Morning Sun Books on the respective roads mentioned above. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 11/30/12 17:04 by rschonfelder. PT Smith Date: 11/30/12 17:32 Re: Hi-Tech details PS-1 Hy-cube Author: Tony_Cook Dan Kohlberg's decals are very good for this model.
Here's a rundown of past HO-scale 40-foot Baby Hy-Cubes and there's a link to Kohlberg's decals at the bottom of the page: http://ho-scaletrains.net/id28.html Date: 11/30/12 17:39 Re: Hi-Tech details PS-1 Hy-cube Author: nikon1 You would need 70 ton roller bearing trucks with 33 inch wheels. Athearn, exactrail would work.

These are nice cars especially with the modifications noted above. Search for RPM photos and links that others have posted here. They are a popular car at these shows. This is 87-1358 which also includes what is needed for the GATX 52' CUSHION UNDERFRAME cars Moloco is making. The sheet includes the 2800 and 2900 series cars with the bright yellow doors, the brown doors with large white LRD and the final simplified paint.

Mike Hi Mike, To be fair mate, you'll get more enjoyment from the hobby if you don't expect it all to be served on a plate for you. All it takes is a little bit of work on your behalf and the photos are there for you to have. The Hi-Tech website gives you some road numbers. Its them up to you to check the railroad photo site on the web. This time however, I've done that for you. Despite my mild rebuke, I'll assume that maybe you didn't know these existed, so this time I've done the searching for you. CB&Q series was 19825-19871 Fallen Flags have the following pics http://gelwood.railfan.net/cbq/cbq19867jpa.jpg http://gelwood.railfan.net/cbq/cbq19840ajs.jpg http://gelwood.railfan.net/cbq/cbq19831ajs.jpg which became BN series 281425-281474 (I sourced this info from a friend who models BN) Railcar Photos have the following pics http://www.railcarphotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=37254 http://www.railcarphotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=37255 Railroad Picture Archives have the following MILW photo http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=910363 Railcar Photos have the following DRGW photo http://www.railcarphotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=42749 Looks like no excuse not to buy one now, eh? -:) cheers Dave PS.
