Model Railroading > Smokey Valleys GE b unitDate: 12/12/12 11:49 Smokey Valleys GE b unit Author: MrOGDEN Group,
Are these kits still available? I called SV and got no answer. MrOGDEN Date: 12/12/12 12:18 Re: Smokey Valleys GE b unit Author: BNModeler I got one if you need it.

I adapted a kit to fit a Atlas High nosed B23-7, but it's not all that easy to do.
Ted Curphey Ontario, OR Date: 12/12/12 16:51 Re: Smokey Valleys GE b unit Author: mgwsy1978 Ted what was the issue with the Atlas units? I plan to use Atlas units to make a couple of them and if you have any tips I would be glad to hear them.
Date: 12/12/12 21:34 Re: Smokey Valleys GE b unit Author: pmack The RailPower shell is shorter in height and has a rounder top than the Atlas shell. The SV part is then too short, too narrow and too round. I flattened out the top piece by scribing the back of it and shimmed the bottom of the sides. It is a bit of work but can be done and the result is better than the RPP shell. The grills on the back are a bit tricky though unless you model one of the first order (4000-4052) as built or pick one of the numbers that never got modified.
I found an under construction photo and you can see the SV part doesn't quite line up as well as the filler strips. Date: 12/12/12 22:56 Re: Smokey Valleys GE b unit Author: tracktime pmack Wrote:

Looks great. How does scribing the back of the top piece help make the cab(less) roof match better with the Atlas roof contour? Thanks. Best Regards, Harry Date: 12/13/12 04:08 Re: Smokey Valleys GE b unit Author: funnelfan The SV part was designed to overlap the roof of the shell. But since the Atlas model is much flatter on top, you need to flatten the SV part to match. I also used a razor saw to scribe some grooves into the back of the SV part to make it flatten easier. In the end there is a lot of cutting, filling and trimming that needs to be done to adapt the SV kit to the Atlas model. This has been discussed before.

I plan on making a couple of the Providence & Worcester ones that they got from the BN. Eventually I plan to model one of the coal trains I ran using PW power. I actually have a RPP B23-7 shell but I think the Atlas shells have better details even though the parts need to be modified a little its a better alternative then the RPP shell. The modifications to the SV kit have been discussed only in broad terms in the past: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?3,2222082,2222082#msg-2222082 However, there was no prior discussion on how to flatten the cab roof of the utility cab until this current thread. Thanks for the tips. Cheers, Harry Date: 12/13/12 11:06 Re: Smokey Valleys GE b unit Author: MrOGDEN The model I want to do is a ex CR/EL U33C that General Electric had on hand back in the 80's. GE sent four of them to its Cleveland apparatus shop and rebuilt them with 1800 hp Cummins enginges and removed the cab, but kept the low nose. I just might go with a B23/30 shell and use it. Thanks Everyone for your suggestions and images.MrOGDEN
