Evans Projects (part 1) [FINISHED]
Author: MrMRL

* See page 2 for the end results of the first of two Evans hoppers... *

~

So, next on the shelve...

I've got a pair of ExactRail's Evans 4780 Cu. Ft. hoppers. One in Garvey Grain Green, the other in Far-port Coop Gray. What to do with the Garvey is easy. I've photographed a recent MRL patch job that is perfect for this hopper. The Far-port is still up in the air. I've found images for DME, EEC, & TFM patches so far, but still can't decide what to do with it. There are probably other good candidates out there, but RRPictureArchives.net is on the fritz again... (sigh)

Links to possibilities for the Far-port...

1) The Garvey, fresh from the box...
2) Prototype inspiration for the soon to be MRL patch job.
3) The Far-port, fresh from the box...

Hey, I need one of those. Want to make me one? I'm sure you've had more practice and can do better work. Actually I do need to start creating some of MRL's fine patch work cars for my supply.

Just a quick MRL update. All of the 46xxx leasers are going back. Most have been cleaned out and relettered SIRX. The MRL 51xxx cylindrical hoppers owned by MRL are coming back from lease to Greebrier and their MRL reporting marks are getting restored.

I will be watching the conversions as you work through them here on TO.

True Color now has an MRL Grey paint but it is not a very good match to the patch on the MRL cars. The True Color paint is a perfect match to the repainted grain cars now retired and some 85' mow equipment flats.

Step :1 First round heavy acrylic weathering with Flat black, raw umber, rust, dark earth acrylics, with alcohol washing in between. (Trucks are still stock, and roof hatch has been removed.)

Of course you had to leak such valuable information, now I'm not so sure I should patch it "MRL". I'd be dating the hopper pretty severely since MRL's lease on these only started in what, 2011?

SIRX is a seriously good candidate though. Some of them look like they've been around for 100+ years!

Yes, and pretty much graffiti free.

I have side pictures of an imperial, Nebraska hopper car taken about 2004-05-06 area. If you want me to upload it I can look for it. It looks exactly like the model you have there.

If it's not too much trouble, please upload them. Any prototype photo available can prove extremely helpful when it comes to recreating proper lettering and weathering options. Thanks!

Ok, I'll do some digging tomorrow morning and see if I can find them. If I have a lot of pictures and it's dated back some time, so I cant guarantee anything.

OK, more progress tonight...

Step 3: Base weathering of the wheelsets and trucks for both Evans hoppers. Acrylic washes of rust and umber for the wheels, flat black and dark earth for the sideframes. ExactRail's trucks are simply exquisite pieces of plastic tooling. By far one of the best looking trucks out there. (in my most humble of opinions...)

1) before...
2) after...
3) after/before/after

Step 4: repaint of the Garvey hopper roof hatch from the stock green to D&H Gray to simulate a replacement fiberglass cover. Ready for fine detailing and weathering...

Re: Evans Projects

Step 5: Roof detailing including hatch detailing, grain spillage, and rusty/replaced walkway sections. More dark earth tone acrylics, Raw Sienna and TTX yellow blend for spillage, Silver Sharpie marker for new walkway panels.

Hey RRPA.net is up! Woo! I was able to dig up two decent left & right side shots of Far-port Coop Imperial, NE Evans hoppers patched for EEC. What would modelers do without such a accessible freight car resource?!?

EEC 61847 - (heavily tagged on one side...)

www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=425385

EEC 61607 - (minimal graffiti)

EEC 61126 below isn't Far-port, but a very similar Farmers Coop Daykin, NE Evans with some nifty weathering possibilities. Only 242 miles apart between the two hometowns. Hey, at least they're in the same state!

Mr. MRL - Oh, if only I could some how recreate that eau de parfum of fermented corn now.

I vote you keep the MRL reporting marks. Two more examples for your reference.
