More Upper Level progress on the California Southern
Author: MrMRL

Continuing from last week's thread...

3/4" plywood has been laid down for the second level decking to assist in determining track placement and future subroadbed cuts. 1" masonite strips are still being used to visualize potential track curvature and final shape. The section with the 9" wide cardboard cross-stips will be single track with two passing sidings. The rest of the single track run will be built on a 4" wide deck.

The mainline will continually rise on a roughly 1.75-2% grade throughout this area. (lower grade to the right in the 4th pic, summit on the left side in pic 4). All of this new trackwork will eventually be above the fluorescent lighting for the lower level.

Thanks for looking!

The curved shape seen in the background on the decking in pic 4 consists of 2" wide cardboard strips carefully cut out at 60° curves between 40" and 52" radius.

I was down at the club last night and the layout looks great.

Looks like the floor could use some love once this is finished.

Hey, thats authentic 1950s asbestos tile from one of the properties' previous lives as the Norwalk dance studio. But yeah, we do have new carpet waiting in the wings...

Are there any special challenges doing new heavy construction and framing above a fully detailed lower level? Will the scenery on the upper level be sloppy plaster or cleaner acrylics?

Thanks.

Sawdust and other debris can present a challenge when working over an existing lower level. The club is in possession of numerous large sheets of scrap cardboard along with multiple rolls of plastic drop cloth for those situations where construction wreckage is unavoidable.
