Key Imports - HO Scale - Union Pacific 4-6-6-4 Challeng
Author: dcmkris

We see plenty of diesels on here so how about a little steam to brighten up the mood!
Or would that darken the mood?

This is a Key Imports brass Union Pacific 4-6-6-4 Challenger. It was painted with a
custom mix of Vallejo paints to closely match the old Floquil Grimy Black. It's lettered
with aluminum lettering to represent a loco from the early to mid 1950's.

It was finished off with a light to moderate coat of grease and grime to mimic those units
found in service, but not yet used and abused heavily.

Can you give me an idea of the paint mix and the prep work required for brass with this paint?

Really nice! The painting and weathering are first rate! This looks like it just rolled off the Eastern District in the 1950s'

No problem actually the Vallejo paints are very friendly to use. I also have hear that there is a group working with them to hopefully bring railroad colors to the market in the near future.
I still put Tru-Color as my number one go to since it has so many RR colors but this could become a close second.

Anyway's we don't really change much from our standard prep work on a brass model.

#1: Strip in grit blasting booth
#2: Warm soapy bath with air dry
#3: Primer in the case of steam we like to use Tamyia gray as it gives a darker base to start from
#4: Then we paint straight onto the model in this case Vallejo #164 Dark Blue Gray, thinned with distilled water. Straight out of the bottle it matches Floquil Grimy Black (Not just by sight but through spectrum tested just like any of the major home improvement stores does.) (You could add in some black to darken it if you wanted or white to lighten it)
#5: While it's an acrylic we still bake the unit for 30 minutes after each coat of paint, and was of weathering and finally dullcoat. We use water based dull coats to prevent yellowing found in lacquer based dull coats.

I added a PIC of the unit broken down for painting, and one of the bulkhead all painted up.

Anymore questions feel free to ask.

Kris
