Model Railroading > Cabless Dash8s anyone?

It is my understanding that ATSF at one point went to GE for a quote for cabless DASH8-40Bs to complement their existing 500-class DASH8-40BWs. Of course, that never came to pass, but HO modelers now can have a shot at this. See the following part for a good starting point.

No kidding.. and this nose is based on a prototype (Australian CM40-8Ms) that have a long hood very much like a standard US DASH8-40C.

So let's see now.. cabless ATSF DASH8-40CBs? cabless DASH9-44CWs? cabless GEVOs? Now that we have this part, that cabless nose is not just for Aussies anymore! =)

It was only used for 3 cabless CM40-8Ms and those units subsequently got cabs.

Three units is infinitely more than what the ATSF ever had for cabless GEs. I am happy that a cabless DASH8 came to fruition in this world, even if only for a season or two.

Cabless diesels. A money saving idea which resurfaces with nearly every new generation of managers only to prove once again inconvenience seems to trump savings time and time again. Too bad the LMX GEs weren't equipped with these.

Makes for a nice model project, though.

To sweeten the pie I believe the CM40-8M b-units had ALCo Hi-Ad trucks under them, like the BN C636s...

There's some pretty neat stuff on that site under model trains... even has the NS SD60E cabs and the so-called "Admiral Cabs" for the SD40-2 rebuilds.

Yeap, rebuilt from C636/M636s (can't remember the exact ones these three were rebuilt from but BHP had Dash-8 rebuilds from both types).
