Back in August of last year, I started a kit-bash project to convert one of the Walthers SW1s into a late phase SW1 based on CNW 1276 built in 1953. After shelving the project for several months, I’m back at it. At this point, I’ve finished the detailing and have the painting and decals finished. I just need to do the weathering and install the window glazing and headlight lamps.

Photo 1:
I didn’t like the boxy steps on the cast metal frame, so I removed them using a file. I also removed the coupler buffer plates, which were way too wide. I used a Northwest Short Line True Sander to clean off the end plates. I thinned them down a little bit too.

Photo 2:
This photo shows the “new” step treads in place, which were cannibalized from a Proto-2000 SW1200 shell. I dislike plastic handrails with a passion, but the Proto handrails aren’t too bad on their SW1200. Scratch building the handrails was an option, but I couldn’t figure out an easy way to make them with all the fittings and intricate brackets. So, I decided to use the Proto railings. I attached them by drilling #80 holes and pinning them to the frame with brass wire. CA adhesive was also used. The wires were snipped flush after the CA was dry. Before painting, the frame with the railings attached, was grit-blasted to help the paint stick better. The photo also shows the DA footboards and DW scale coupler buffer plates installed.

Nice detailing. That big back porch needs a water cooler on all that space.

Great job & beautiful work.

I agree with those steps nice engine but awful to look at those solid steps.
I did the same with a pair of Atlas GP-7's but I had the advantage of a mill
to do the removal work.

Outstanding work as always Dennis. It's always a treat to see one of your threads.

Back in the 1990s, an IAIS crew that worked a local branch had a long day of very slow running ahead of them, and they were known to set up a grill on top of the short hood and cook their lunch enroute. :-)

Yes, my prototype has a similar curtin. I need to explore ways to make one.

What detail is missing on my model that is common on EMD switchers from the 1950s? It was also missing on the prototype 1276.

"Ding!" You are correct. I'm assuming the CNW forces mounted one under the frame somewhere.

Thanks everyone, for the compliments on my modeling work.

Fantastic work! So far as the curtain goes, when I did one of these on an SW a while back, I rolled up a really thin sheet of brass, cut to shape, and then wrapped a pair of brass straps around it as per the prototype. Once painted and weathered, it looks great.

Dennis, FWIW, I made the tarp on IAIS 250 from tissue wrap that I painted Floquil Concrete, then soaked in diluted white glue and rolled around two pieces of scale lumber (as was the prototype) I cut from stock. Pic is attached.
