Model Railroading > Mud to rock, rock to track, track to fun

New trackage starts with earthwork, helped by tractor with blade, hindered
by rain and mud.

Crushed concrete forms the sub roadbed - this time the rain helps to harden
the rock material to give the track a solid base - important outdoors,
like good plywood or spline roadbed is just as important to HO scale trains.

Track panels, built in the barn during the hot summer months, are laid on the
sub roadbed and ballasted with limestone.

The time between the second and third photo we took out the "kink, or S curve"
in the sub roadbed seen in second photo. We have one more switch to install behind
the orange speeder before the fun part takes place.

This switch is 1/3 of a new wye trackage we finished today.

There is a switch to the right and left of the photo and the third leg
of the wye runs behind those trees in back.

Here is a new switch being installed for a new 60 foot passing siding.

10 foot track panel in barn being fabricated on a jig. 35 ties per panel.

That is a fascinating series of pictures. It is very interesting to see what was/is involved in bringing the railroad to life, Wrong Way.

From the looks of it bet it holds together better than that rock we use at Train Mountain it wont pack at all. Also nothing under the ballast like landscaping fabric or plastic makes the water go away better. It was used at TM for weed control and frost heave problems but now we use weed killer and the frost heave seems to take place no matter what.
