Bowser C636 Exhaust Stack casting issue
Author: CCT41

Ok, I have had two C636s so far, that have issues where the plastic was not drawn all the way into the mold, and the stack did not form correctly. Has anyone else noticed this on their models? Here are photos of the first model I received and subsequently returned.

Here are photos of the second model I just received. This one is not quite as bad.

You might be able to correct that with a little Bondo Glazing & Spot putty available at any auto parts store. Apply to affected area - let dry then file and sand to appropriate shape.

Now that is something to be upset about.

This is known as a "non-fill" in injection molding terms. This is the last place to fill, and so the plastic is cooling off and just could not quite get there. It is easily prevented. Higher temperature, or higher pressure, or both are indicated.

The areas are also quite repeatable and therefore readily inspected if the operators etc. care to look.

Hi John,
I just went and checked my one C636 which I kept and do not have this issue. Wow, you have two locos from independent runs and this has come through. The injection was supposedly done in the USA and the parts sent on to China for assembly. This means it passed QC in two different forms of manufacture.

As I've said before, this has to be the worst model to have been brought to market. [for those who take exception to this statement, I emphasise "brought to market".] While the body is very nice, like a woman with a nice body, the rest of it comes with a lot of high maintenance. I put a decoder in my C636 after I lowered the body. The loco has an absolutely gutless motor in it and I could not adjust the maximum speed. I am not a slotcar runner of my trains but this is not quite there and I am certain it will not MU very well with its' low end running. My first running session is tomorrow at our club so it will be interesting to see how it pulls and if the motor proves me wrong. I filed every one of the gears too and got one truck to roll freely but not the other. I can tell you I am not going in there again. Bowser is sending me a replacement set of high-ad trucks which will likely have come from their C630 Reading release.

As your issue is part of the overall body, it is up to you but, I suggest returning it from where it came. I followed Bruce Friedman's lead and returned my four untouched C636's. I have also heard of some stores returning their entire order of Bowser C636's so there seems to be an element of non-acceptance. I sure hope Bowser survives this. There seems to be some, maybe many, who think this C636 model is acceptable for their collection. Unfortunately, I could not take the same stance.

Rick

Ill have to check mine, I was more concerned with fixing the bowing at the cab and angled batter/step boxes which I did

Edit, none of the 3 sps engines I have have the exhaust issue.

I just received a third model, and it does not have the issue. Once I get the original return squared away with Caboose (the have misplaced my returned model), I will contact Bowser to see what they can do. Otherwise this will also go back to Caboose.

I'd also have the trucks looked into...they don't look like all 3 axles will sit on the track at the same time

I had the same bowing, at the cab, of one of my two 636's that I received. Have to investigate soon !

The bowing of the walkway is two parts, first part is the frame must of been bent when the coupler pocket went it. The other is cab has slots that fit into the long hood vertically I had to trim those and I also reseated the battery boxes (sanded the tabs and glued then square)
