More San Diego Model Railroad Museum
Author: dmaffei

Going through some old photos tonight, I found a few from 2010 I didn't post.

It's been to long and I should pay another visit as I'm sure much has happened since 2010. This is by far one of the most photogenic model railroads in California.

Thanks for the posted photos. I went to Tehachapi a couple of times before I visited the layout and right away I knew where I was on the layout. The fidelity is just amazing.

My shots pale in comparison to Mr. Maffei's but since there was much outcry for steam in the older post, I thought I'd add these from a visit last year. Anytime I'm down there I have to drag my wife and son through the museum (unfortunately my rail foaming genes weren't passed on to my son) but they usually have just as much fun as i do. Including waiting for what seemed to be an eternity for that SF Passenger train (The Grand Cyn.?) to reach the loop.

Excellent photos of the recreation of a historic piece of railroading. Thank you very much. It makes me homesick.

Always a pleasure to see photo's of that layout. Too bad it's at the far southwestern corner and a very long way from Washington DC where I presently live. I guess that's what airplanes are for; I hope to get out there one day and see it operate in person!

I especially like the classic 70's and 80's era SP with the good old SP bloody nose SD's running!

That SF train looks like the SF Chief before high-levels, except for the express box. The Grand Canyon, which I rode regularly between Mojave and Bakersfield in the late 40s and early 50s, had a bunch of head-end cars, plus LW coaches and 6-6-4 Pullmans from the Golden Gate. It was always an interesting train. Great shots of a REALLY accurate model of Tehachapi Pass...

Folks unfamiliar with Tehachapi Pass may be puzzled by photo 2. What you're looking at is the remains of Tunnel 4, which was destroyed in the 1952 earthquake. The model of the concrete tunnel lining now serves as an impromptu retaining wall. I love Ted Haas's model--don't know how he did it, as nothing is square, and everything has crumbled and slid partway down the hillside. The realigned track now goes around the former tunnel site.

That scene does look clearly like an old abandon tunnel was modeled, and it looks very cool I might add!
Thanks for the history!

Ilmon...between end of two tracks at Bena and Caliente, the beginning of the steep climb.

(at least dim memory tells me that after last being there in 1973)

Yes, short hike from grade crossing at Bealville east to top of tunnel 3.

Great photos.
Awesome layout.
It must be nice to have that much room.
