Model Railroading > NYC Sleeper Service on the Santa Fe ChiefDate: 02/25/15 07:39 NYC Sleeper Service on the Santa Fe Chief Author: superchief73 I am sharing these pics and need some advise on decals for this NYC Thru Sleeper for my Santa Fe Chief. I understand a select few NYC Cascade 10-5 sleepers saw service thru ATSF rails. I am looking for the decals for these particular sleepers and have been unable to locate. Micro-Scale does not show online.
I will be adding passengers and LED lighting, handrails along with DCC Soundcar and Speaker. Javier Cervantes Castle Rock , CO Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 02/25/15 07:52 by superchief73. Maybe name this car 'West Nile'? (...you need to smash that 'skeet-o' in the lower left corner of photo 2) Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 02/25/15 08:20 by penncentral74. Date: 02/25/15 12:14 Re: NYC Sleeper Service on the Santa Fe Chief Author: rswebber I don't know about that. Given the NEW YORK CENTRAL - as opposed to PULLMAN, you'd be talking post 1949 at least. From there, the cars used were 4-4-2s or 10-6s AFAIK. If you have a specific year and season you're interested in I could verify it. The CASCADEs were pre-war and not all that in favor as a transcontinental sleeper. As a non-scheduled car, it might still work, but there you'd be talking about something else entirely in terms of the names and details (era, lettering, striping, etc. etc. So, first you have to zero in on the year and season (if not month and day and day of the week) - not all cars ran daily, not all cars ran year round, etc. And, post late 1956...all bets are off.

I wondered the same thing: http://www.soundtraxx.com/dsd/soundcar/soundcar.php Sounds include: Brake cylinders Brake squeal Clickety-clack: Adjustable for 2-, 4- and 6-axle cars Coupler clank and pin drop Coupler release with glad hand separation Flange squeal Flat spots Emergency brake valve (“big hole”): Activated when the emergency stop button is pressed Generators: User-adjustable for reefers and passenger cars Hand brake tie down and untie The freight samples on the website sound pretty good. I guess maybe every 5th or 10th car would have sound? Date: 02/25/15 12:34 Re: NYC Sleeper Service on the Santa Fe Chief Author: superchief73 rswebber Wrote:

This is a great point. My research in the last week has brought me to a similar conclusion. I Purchased the Santa FE Society Sleeper book and Pre WarCascade with Pullman letterboard is all that is shown for 10-5 sleepers. Thank you for reiterating this. As for this model it now has to be finished with "Stand-In" in mind and/or an unscheduled add thru sleeper. Nevertheless, I will give it the details it lacks and Run on my 1951 Chief. Date: 02/25/15 13:04 Re: NYC Sleeper Service on the Santa Fe Chief Author: pwh When I saw the 20th Century Limited in the early fifties it had two Santa Fe sleepers, a 10-6 and 4-4-2, as the first sleeping car in the train. These went west from Chicago on the Super Chief.

Date: 02/25/15 21:36 Re: NYC Sleeper Service on the Santa Fe Chief Author: peddler Fred Frailey's "Quarter Century of Santa Fe Consists" lists a 4-4-2 as the through
car to/from NYC #25 & #26 in 1946 handled by Santa Fe's Chief #19/20 between Chicago and Los Angeles. Also listed is a 4-4-2 for the PRR's #28/29 Broadway Ltd and a 6-6-4 for the B&O's #5/6 Capitol Ltd. In 1954 these cars were handled on the Super Chief #17/18 between Chicago and Los Angeles with a 10-6 replacing the 6-6-4. These were all Santa Fe cars. peddler Date: 02/26/15 06:42 Re: NYC Sleeper Service on the Santa Fe Chief Author: ATSF3751 RRTom Wrote:

Come on people it's a sleeper, you'd hear people snoring. Ed Date: 02/26/15 08:22 Re: NYC Sleeper Service on the Santa Fe Chief Author: pullmanboss rswebber Wrote:

Heavyweight Pullman sleepers transferred to RR ownership on 12/31/48, but the lightweights (and HW parlor cars) transferred on 12/31/45. The OP might be OK with New York Central on the letterboard. As for the sound system, I recall the Walther's 10-5 has a Pullman Heavyweight mechanical a/c system and spicer drive for power generation. Maybe you don't need the sound thingie for this car.

I think the Santa Fe Hi-Levels and Budd full length domes were among the first cars with onboard diesel generators; until then, most cars used axle-powered generators and batteries. I am still learning the underbody equipment for the Diner and Lounge. I think 3 decoders for the 12 car consist will bring the effect im after. Javier Cervantes Castle Rock , CO |
