There is a resemblance -- both types have cowl carbodies -- but they are definitely not the same thing. The SD40-2F bears a stronger similarity to the SD50F/SD60F models on CN, which makes sense since they were produced at about the same time.

All we need now is the SD60F, SD50F, and the SDF40-2 / SDP40F and we're good. Are you listening out there?

The design feature being the cowl nose and carbody with the 'Draper taper' behind the cab, allowing space for a rear window and an amount of added visibility for the crew to look to the rear. Didn't catch on south of the border.

Thanks Dave! I also see what I was trying to remember, one poster mentioned the Draper Taper. that's what I was referring to also.

From the 'Cowl Unit' Wikipedia:

..."Draper Taper (named after its creator, William L. Draper, a former Canadian National assistant chief of motive power)"...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cowl_unit

Seems like an odd name for a Wikipedia, maybe it translate into, or out of, another Language (perhaps French).

My question was why call the topic 'Cowl Unit', why not some other phrase. Sometimes the automatic Language conversion that Google and others use for their websites make up some strange phrases.

Really don't know what a better phrase would be though. Full-body? Wide-body? Canadian Cabs? I thought 'Drape'r would be a common description through the examples, but the author picked 'Cowl_Units'.

Cowl was chosen because that's the name that's commonly used to refer to locomotives of this design.....why use hood unit to define the standard locomotive design of today? Why not verandah? Or porch? Or narrow body? It's not a translation from another language, 'cowl' was used to describe the F45/FP45s and other locomotives of the same design.
