New? It's the same re-re-re-rehashed SD40-2....with a 10 year old sound decoder.
The price isn't horrible.

Don't forget Undecorated. They haven't offered those since the first time the Bethgons were released. The price is definitely steep though. I remember balking a paying $20 for them about 8 years ago.

Can some one tell me what the "MAP" announcement is about (what does MAP stand for??). I can't find any info on it on Athearns web site. Thanks.

best regards,

EDIT: Okay, now just got a revised announcement newsletter 20 minutes after the first one that's missing the MAP text. Guess that was info that wasn't supposed to get out. But I'd still like to know what "MAP" is all about.

MG:

MAP stands for Minimum Advertised Price.

This means this is the only price the dealer can advertised the item for in any form of media, example direct web-site or eBay Store.

While most major companies in this industries have MAP policies they are not as well enforced as in other industries.

SoundTraxx allows 20% off retail as their MAP price, but most companies it is normally full MSRP.

With the above stated please note the following:

1) They can't tell you or control the ACTUAL SELLING price to the customer but you can't show them it either.   In a retail store you can tell the customer your price.  Same over the phone.

2) Now comes in the credit card associations like MasterCard who say you must show the price the consumer will pay if the web-site allows for direct (buy it now) sales.   Most industries don't put much stock in this because again there has been little if any follow through (i.e. MasterCard going to Manufacture X and telling them the dealer needs to be able to show the price) because of this work around:  You "Display" the actual "Selling Price once the item is added to the "Shopping Cart".   Which means in some cases you may have to create an account and be logged in to see it but not in all cases.

I worked in an industry for a number of years that started MAP policies in the early 2000's.   One major manufacturer strictly enforced the policy with all major mail order companies to the point of 1 phone call, 2 letters (of violations) then they tell their distributors you were done and you could no longer purchase the product.   In case of the company I worked for sales for this product line pre-map were $500,000 a year because we had the lowest prices and the customer could see that anytime day or night, print, web-site, eBay, etc.   Post MAP over the next year sales dropped to about $200,000 because the consumer did not want to play the game.

MAP has been around in other industry for years.

While I won't go there watch the Pre-Order" rules also as they will be getting stricter and will be better enforced by the major manufacturers.  Some internet sellers have already backed off in offering pre-orders on everything (been discussed here on T/O)  and are now limiting what you can pre-order.

MAP pricing is Minimum Advertised Price, which is an agreement between a supplier and a retailer for the retailer not to advertise an item below a certain minimum price. Not a fan of the practice. Hopefully Athearn isn't going to institute it as it makes consumers jump through hoop to find the lowest available price.

If you go to a website and it makes you add the item to your cart in order to see the actual price, that is one way retailers get around the MAP pricing hassle.

If you're sayingthat pre-orders are going to be restricted, then heaven help this hobby. Given the minimum quantities available and a restriction on pre-orders, well then it becomes a free for all for what little is manufactured.  If this will be the case, I'm out.

MAP sounds like something Apple created.  I know Dick Smith Electorinics here in Australia lost the right to handle their product for the violations described by Northridgeswitcher above.

If they restrict pre-orders, how will they know how few to produce?

i think they serve a sentence of two years and then "get out on good behaviour" and can restock.  This happened 3-4 years ago.

May be a 10 year old sound decoder but it still functions well, sounds really good and is easy to program. I know the big rage now seems to be Loksound and some engine types of Loksound do sound better but the Tsunami 645 is pretty solid. I'll get a couple BN units.

I have observed this practice with particular merchandise at a certain popular hobby-dealer website, and suspect it will become more common. Placing it in your "cart" is essentially asking "What does this cost?" without committing to buying it....

That practice may not last.  Canon has used MAP pricing for some time on their lenses and cameras, and a lot of photo stores used the same "add to cart to see price" trick.  Canon cracked down on it, and the only way to find a good deal now is by asking around directly with the retailer, or using a third party site who does that work for you.
