Modeling tip. Ripples in a still pond
Author: markloos

To add interest to a still water pond you can add small lines of plaster to the pond bottom, then paint the bottom green and finish off with clear resin or Woodland Scenics water. I added the BN red engine to better highlight the reflection. Now if I can just get control of those pesky HO scale mosquitoes…… Mark <><

Very believable, and the rock work is really good, too.

Very good, had the unit been weathered and no DRGW cab in distance would have been tough to tell real from model.

I think you have a drainage problem. <G>

Weathering is in the eyes of each modeller.

That's very cool Mark!  Looks great!  I may be swiping that idea, if you don't mind. ;-)

Mark, how deep are the grooves?  I would have thought that the self levelling of the epoxy would smooth it out.

Hi Dan.  In this instance , I used the Woodland Scenics water. It is indeed self leveling and the top of the pond is level. What you are seeing is the small plaster ripple lines just below the surface.  Entire depth of the pond is about 1/4" at it's deepest.  I use just enough "water" to cover the ripples. What you are seeing is the illusion of ripples caused by the overhead lighting.  Mark  <><

Wait, what? Those ripples are not on the surface?

Correct.  They are not on the surface. The surface is actually smooth.  This technicque takes a little practice and patience but, hey, model railroading is FUN.    Mark  <><

This has really got me scratrching my head. Seems there must be some rippling of the surface itself to get the reflection to do that. Can't see how it would work otherwise but, either way, it looks great!
