Thinner for floquil
Author: campgus

I have a few bottles of Floquil paint, but no Dio-sol, what can I use for a thinner?
How about for brusxh cleanup?
Thanks,
Gus

I'm interested if anything new comes up for an answer to your question. I investigated this months ago when it was brought up. What I found was a 50/50 mixture of xylene and tyulol (excuse the spelling) and a very small amount of Floquil Retarder, I think. Good Luck.

Yes, Xylene and Toluene. Both of which you will be able to purchase at your local Ace Hardware Store.

IIRC, Diosol was listed as containing "Toluol" which is listed a commercial form of Toluene.
Toluene is a common solvent, e.g. for paints, paint thinners, silicone sealants,[20] many chemical reactants, rubber, printing ink, adhesives (glues), lacquers, leather tanners, and disinfectants
Use of a respirator is strongly advised when working with the stuff; it is a VOC I used to test for as a part of the BTEX suite using a gas chromatograph back in my environmental consulting days.  Benzene, Toluene, Ethyl benzene and Xylenes (meta, para and ortho).  Basically a suite of petrolium based volatile organic compounds.

I always thinned my Floquil with Scalecoat thinner; just not as much as you do with Scalecoat paint.

Lacquer thinner will thin Floquil - can also be used to clean up.

Scalecoat thinner works great.

At one time I used to mix Floquil in with clear lacquer for painting steam engines.   That's back in the '70s and I think they changed the formula since then and you can't really get nitrocellulose lacquer any more anyway.  Worked pretty darned good.

Acetone is a good clean up agent.

Cheap Laquer Thinner is best. You don't need brand name crap.

Until you ruin an airbrush or a paint job....
