Train Derailments

Train derailments do happen, unfortunately. Seeing the Newburgh post got me to thinking about posting this one from the Cheyenne's Sherman Hill Mdel Railroad Club layout in the Frontier mall exhibit. The train was backing into the staging area. No one was injured and the Mechanical crews had it cleaned up and track service restored in short time. I am sure the Superintendent's office will be holding a "fair and impartial" hearing.

What's truly amazing is the one trailer defying gravity.

Clearly a case of excessive amperage used during a shove move.

Prepare for the kangaroo court.

Take note of how well the cab of UP 6915 held up with the new crash protection.

Still, a good example for TTX to show durability of their trailers in mishaps.

I wonder if a couple of loaded open hopper buffer cars would have eliminated this wreck and kept 6915 upright?????

That is one of our tightest curves on the layout also on a grade. I developed what is now commonly called the "Bob" method where when leaving with a long train for the outside main I pull it out backwards to our long siding and run around it before crossing over to the westbound instead of backing it out. Especially when using cars longer than 50 foot. Maybe I will run one this weekend and take photos of the operation.
