Blue Foam Mountains - Progress Update
Author: MrMRL

For those following along from my thread 3 weeks back. Old Thread --> http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?3,4239924

Time for a progress photo report on the construction of blue foam mountains at the California Southern Model Railroad Club. Pics all captured within the past few weeks, compiled by section to try and show building and shaping of the hillsides.

First pic below looking back at where we were 21 day ago. Simple beginnings with raw 1.5" sheets in front and below the track, and just the first row of 2 sheet above and behind the track.

The foam looks great, but my eye was drawn to your superb triple track laid perfectly IMHO!  Great work, thanks for sharing.

That's going to be a nice looking scene.  I can visualize the scenery and control point signals and details at the end of the triple track.

When cut, it has an uncanny look of frozen artic ice!

Thanks for sharing this. Does the foam get painted directly, and that finishes it, or is the a material added on top of it before painting?

We will be adding a layer of plaster/plaster cloth to the surface of the foam shapes before painting the scenes with light earth toned latex paints.

Yes, this is the upper deck of a two level mushroom designed layout. The upper level walkway is raised up on an 18-24" platform to allow for longer smoother 1.5-2.0% grades between the upper and lower sections.
