Model Railroading > Walthers C&O "George Washington" Name TrainDate: 05/16/17 21:13 Walthers C&O "George Washington" Name Train Author: drolsen I don't think it's been mentioned here yet. Walthers announced that their next name train is the C&O's George Washington:
https://www.walthers.com/products/name-trains/george-washington Cool to see them select an East Coast prototype. I don't know anything about its history, so I'll let others comment on that. Though I don't model the C&O the heavyweight RPO looks interesting. Is this currently available in other roads or undec or is this new tooling? It certainly lends itself to other roads.

Date: 05/17/17 05:17 Re: Walthers C&O "George Washington" Name Train Author: SPDRGWfan Some of the cars originally ordered by the C&O ended up going to the D&RGW Prospector as well as the Royal Gorge and the Yampa Valley Mail. Except for a placard board, the Walthers 52-seat coach is a close match for the Rio Grande P-S chair cars. Walthers has produced them in Rio Grande 4-stripe paint at least twice. I have two from the earlier run I picked up when Walthers was blowing them out for $16 each.
When I compared the photo's of the new Walthers C&O sleeper in the announcement to the D&RGW Prospector sleeper, it looks like the windows match. If that C&O sleeper is a match to the one used by the Prospector, that car may be leveraged by Walthers and painted for D&RGW too - hopefully they will. Walthers could tool up a diner and combine based on that same C&O order and could then offer a basic Rio Grande Prospector (combine, chair(s), diner, sleeper(s). They could hopefully use them for C&O trains too so double useful, and the combine would be a boon to those who wish to model the Rio Grande Zephyr (using the BLI Budd CZ cars). In fact, the observation car is the diner; three cars in the series were converted to diner-dorms in 1962, and the model depicts them as such. Close inspection of the Walthers photo shows the diner interior. The cars were originally 5 double bedroom, buffet lounge observations. In the rebuilding, three of the double bedrooms were converted to dorm space, while the the buffet kitchen was enlarged into the space of the two remaining bedrooms to serve as a full kitchen. That would be the only thing. I think the only 11DBR that Walthers does is a UP car. Walthers needs 13DBR,14-2,and 12-4 plus the 11. C&O 11DBR's went to the SCL,then to Hamburg Industries for rebuild, then back to SCL on lease.Decals are available. Uncle Joe Seffner,Fl. Given the Budd cars and E7s they have produced in the past, a Sunset Limited would not be a stretch. Oh well.....

They're finally doing a HW RPO-Baggage, albeit in C&O only. Was disappointed the HW RPO-Baggage was never done with their heavyweight car series from several years back. Maybe soon (surprise us). They still don't seem interested in the CB&Q either :( Date: 05/17/17 15:50 Re: Walthers C&O "George Washington" Name Train Author: SPDRGWfan wnehoc Wrote:

Where's my Walthers/BLI/Rapido/MTH Sunset Limited? Best Regards, Harry Date: 05/17/17 18:05 Re: Walthers C&O "George Washington" Name Train Author: randyr I don't model the C&O, but the train looks cool. Especially the rebuilt diner and the RPO. Give them a little credit, they didn't do another retread Santa Fe train. Is the baggage car a close model of the one used on the Eisenhower funeral train? I believe the real one is at the B&O Museum in Baltimore.
Hoping they do use some of these cars and offer the in Rio Grande single stripe with the correct shade of Rio Grande "Aspen Gold". Randy in PHX Posted from iPhone Date: 05/17/17 18:28 Re: Walthers C&O "George Washington" Name Train Author: PHall tracktime Wrote:

Posted from iPhone Date: 05/27/17 21:13 Re: Walthers C&O "George Washington" Name Train Author: wabash2800 I received this from a fellow modeler:
"...the photo they used on the web site is not the car they say that they are making. The car they describe is from the C&O's #81-91 series, which is a series of cars with two baggage doors on each side and a 30-foot postal apartment. The C&O had these with both arch and clerestory roofs. Since these were used a lot on the C&O in Michigan from the late-1950s until the end of RPO service in 1967, they're of keen interest to me." ??? Victor A. Baird http://www.erstwhilepublications.com |
