Model Railroading > Diesel Shells You Want to SeeDate: 05/23/17 17:53 Diesel Shells You Want to See Author: Dreadnought Hello!
You may have seen my earlier Baldwin 'Babyface' thread on this forum. In that thread, I was gauging interest for a shell kit for a Baldwin DR-4-4-1500 diesel. The experience with that survey has taught me a few things about what not to do in this business. Interest in that shell is unfortunately low, so now I want to know what sort of diesel shells you would like to see in HO or N Scale. These shells would have to fit on existing chassis, but will hopefully be able to fit over multiple types of chassis rather than only one. Rather than having a survey, as I did last time, if I believe one shell is sufficiently popular I will set up a pre-order form for it. If enough pre-orders are received, the shell will be produced. Here are a few ideas I have had on this topic. FM H-20-44 Fairbanks Morse's first road switcher, the FM H-20-44 was used by several larger railroads because of its 2,000 HP rating. Unusually for a roadswitcher, it did not feature a short hood. Used by: Union Pacific Pennsylvania New York Central Akron, Canton & Youngstown Pittsburgh & West Virginia This shell would fit over an ALCO FA chassis, since that chassis provides the most correct axle spacing. EMD NW-5 A unique EMD unit developed along the lines of the RS-1. Used by: Southern Union Belt of Detroit Great Northern This shell would fit over a GP chassis. Please tell me any ideas you have, I'd love to hear them. Thank you for your feedback, Dreadnought Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 05/23/17 18:29 by Dreadnought. TJY Date: 05/23/17 18:53 Re: Diesel Shells You Want to See Author: Kemacprr While a RSD-12 would be nice no existing chassis is available. The old Atlas version has too short a wheelbase to be used. Bowser will be doing one in the future. I would love to see a GE U-28c the later versions which also good for a early U-30c. The existing Atlas U-30c and older U-33c chassis are good . Users of the U-28c in my world is the PRR and the U-30c is also PRR/RDG and D&H. The Atlas U-30c version done a few years back is the later car body version .One other idea would be a Alco T-6 switcher body to fit over the Atlas S series or Bachman S series chassis. ---- Ken

I don't even see them at train shows unless I do what Atlas did, put an RS-11 shell on RSD-4 chassis.icancmp193 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > ALCO630 Wrote: > -------------------------------------------------- > ----- > > I vote for an RSD-12. > > Atlas made one. This would get me back into N scale in a heart beat. Michael Mickens Rialto, CA Date: 05/24/17 13:21 Re: Diesel Shells You Want to See Author: JUTower I have a few thoughts, especially if you're interested in doing tooling work that can apply to multiple models:
- GE B36-7 which fits on a B30-7 chassis. CR had 60, ATSF 15, CSXT had a bunch (as SBD earlier). SOU had a few high-hoods. - GE B32-8 which fits on a B40-8 chassis. Only NS had these. But they are neat, and there are a lot of NS/CR modelers who would pick one of these up. - GE C36-7 which fits on a C30-7 chassis. CR, MP, N&W had them, but each RR had a different variant. This is admittedly less commercially viable than the B36-7, I'd think. - GE C30-7A which is only for Conrail fans like myself Also, a good SW1001 shell. RDG/Conrail version. -Alex Date: 05/24/17 15:20 Re: Diesel Shells You Want to See Author: SD45X Either White Pass diesel...

(The RPP C32 body was crude and the Atlas U33C body could be improved.) Absolutely the T-6 and an M420 body to fit the Atlas U23B chassis..( The M420 seems to have disappeared from the Bowser scope...) Also for steel mills and industrials, what about an SW1001 to fit the Athearn SW1500 chassis?
