HO Scale Passenger Trains

1.  Amtrak San Joaquin calling on Martinez, California.  As originally run, this train has only two coaches.

2.  This is the Southern Pacific train Golden State.  Originally it ran from Chicago to Los Angeles.  Today it was captured westbound at American (between Truckee, Ca and Colfax.  In steam locomotive days trains would stop here and let their brake shoes cool.  Passengers would be allowed to get out and stretch their legs. The guardrails seen next to the train would insure that most all of the passengers would get back on the train.  The prototype has quite a drop, and the model is no different.  Losing part of your train over the side here would be enough to make a grown man cry...

As far as I know, this hasn't happened yet.

The Golden State Limited ran from Chicago to Los Angeles.

Wow! TH&B Hudson (or the road name, for that matter) is one we don't see very often on layouts.

Joe

Your personal information sorta matches our TH&B modeler.  He grew up in upstate New York.  He has a few western trains.  He's retired and living the dream in Northern California.

And since the usual route for the Golden State was via El Paso and Yuma, there must have been major blockages on that line to send it via the Central Pacific route via Reno and Sacramento.

Well, since our museum was named the Golden State Model Railroad Museum, it seemed natural to have a train that was named Golden State.  Phil, our Jack of all trades built it.

Although we have modeled specific scenes, we let people run the trains they wish to.  We lack any Prototype Police telling people to pack up their inappropriate trains and go away.   Since we're in the midst of a great metropolitan area, we're bound to attract people from many different backgrounds from around the world and around the country.

This is why there's a TH&B locomotive pulling a passenger train past the Montgomery Wards building in Oakland, an N Scale German train in front of the Sacramento Depot, and many Milwaukee Road trains in O Scale.

Did he work for Santa Fe?

I'm sure all clubs have people running trains from all over the country. But I'd expect them to be heavily weighted to western trains. In northern Virginia, I mostly see eastern trains running and it's pretty rare I get the pleasure of seeing a Rio Grande or SP train, although there are a few UP trains running including 1st gen and steam. I did get to see one guy run a double header SP cab forward train with a very long string of PFE ice reefers - that was very nice and inspired me to begin building an ice reefer train as a one-off. I grew up in northern California in the 70's but wanted a steam train too.

No, a traveling salesman I believe.  We've had other members that were employed by the ATSF.  The museum was started in '87, but the club (East Bay Model Engineers Society) dates back to April of '33 in Alameda, California.  I joined in early 1981.

Thanks you Larry. For a brief time in the early nineties I worked with a guy at Santa Fe who was a huge TH&B fan. In fact, I think he got his start in railroading working for the TH&B as a brakeman during his summer break.

The TH&B fraternity is so small, they probably all know each other.
