Why spend money on decals.
Author: ACL3042

Why spend money on decals, when you can take a paint brush and put the initials and car number on the car.
Here is a prototype car this way.
It is a Dakota Valley and Western slag (ballast) hopper #74. It has been sitting here forever. The location is Daleview, Montana.
This is an ex-CN car.

They'd kick you out of the model railroad club if you modeled this.

As a one-off,it's kind a cool. A whole train full and it would look naff as the Brits would say.

Happen to notice its still in use, well growing something inside of it anyway. Would be and rarely seen in model form an addition to many model railroads.

One way to represent this lettering is to use white out typewriter correction strips with a toothpick to write with then seal it with dull coat. Finding the white out strips in this day and age will be a challenge. The strips were also an easy way to apply the old car routing and graffiti markings.
