SP 1012 Slug - Speed Lettering - What Trucks are these?
Author: RyanWilkerson

While doing some research on the four SP slugs (#1010-1013), I ran across a photo of one that wore the speed lettering scheme.
Comparing photos of it earlier in life, the trucks are different. I'm not a truck expert so I'm hoping someone can point out what these are.
Here's the photo taken by Ken Roble on 4/27/1999 at Little Rock.

To compare the photos of #1012:

Thanks for the help!
(edit, I can't link to photos so...)

Flexicoil switcher trucks like you would see on a EMD SW1500 etc bearing caps are exposed and could be done to Athearn Flexicoil switcher trucks

The two trucks designs (flexicoil and AAR type A) were interchangeable on EMD switchers built with them, trucks needed to be swapped out they used what they had on hand........Joe

That makes sense, thank you for the info. Now, I wonder what size speed letter logo is (to find proper decals)?

Almost looks like the size of the SW1500s or MP15ACs.

I'll probably give that a try when I get to that point.

In case anyone is wondering, the history says:

I also notice: the character style of the numbers isn't standard SP; it's a bit fatter. Guessing it's the same sort of expediency by rebuilders that caused UP, ATSF or DRGW-style characters to appear in the illuminated cab number panels of other SP units, rather than the familiar Common Standard SP typeface.

Neat project!

Good eye BZ. I remember seeing a few other locomotives done with this fatter font, I think a GE B30-7 or similar. Not sure what font it is...I'll get to that when it's time for decals.

I found a commercial font that is about dead-on to that typeface...heck, it was probably what the paint shop used as well. It was also used on the cab numbers of the ex-CSX GP38-2s that Espee acquired via AMF-Montreal; Microscale set MC-4382 (60-4382 for N) has them.

Bet that's exactly how it happened, yup. Sometimes the easy answer is to figure that a shop was looking for the easiest answer too. Goes double for paint colors. There's some evidence that "SP Locomotive Scarlet" is a GM automotive color from the 1930s, kinda the same way "Daylight Red" is related to "Socony" (Standard Oil Company of New York) Red.

Now, to that newly-refinished 1:1 scale CP FP-unit with what looks exactly like the painters cut the road name stencils from modern serif computer font instead of digitizing the CP original typeface. But I never mentioned that, nope! :-)

Great find! Thanks for sharing that info. I remember seeing and getting a few photos of those GP38-2 locos with the short lived 3 digit road number (the AC4400CWs deliveries took those number ranges).
This looks to be right on...I'll be getting a set.
