USS Atlantic City-South Pass Ore Mine?
Author: railwaybaron

Does anyone know whether the old US Steel Atlantic City-South Pass ore trains hauled iron ore or processed taconite? Thanks!

In the later years it was round marble size taconite pellets. Some empty ore taconite gons hauled limestone back to the mine as flux and binder for the pellets.

In earlier times the mine shipped raw ore but USS was always trying to increase the concentration of the iron being shipped such a long distance.

As of 1982, there were spots along the line where you had the distinct feeling you were walking on marbles. Definitely taconite by then.
