Model Railroading > Whats this tool?Date: 02/10/18 20:13 Whats this tool? Author: Clarence Any idea what this rusty estate sale prize might be?
It looks like a drill bit with a very long flute? The writing on it says 1 1/2 x 12 Stanley (maybe) 1525. Anybody know what this was used for? Clarence G Date: 02/10/18 20:21 Re: Whats this tool? Author: pmack Screw pilot hole bit for #12 screw.

Drill the pilot hole, excavate the countersink for the screw head all in one shot. Screws drive in effortlessly afterward....speeds up things considerably.

Date: 02/11/18 13:11 Re: Whats this tool? Author: Clarence I just never saw a drill bit with a long, I guess it's called a flute, before. Usually they're more twisty. Maybe I'm used to seeing metal work bits.
Clarence Date: 02/11/18 13:12 Re: Whats this tool? Author: Jeff_Johnston Use of a pilot bit also seriously reduces the chances of splitting out the end of a piece of wood. I'm never is so much of a hurry to build something that I can't take the time to drill a pilot hole first. Just because many screw types will self-drill into a piece of wood doesn't necessarily mean they should be used that way in all circumstances.

Author: czuleget There is several variations of this tool. the one in the picture is for ( Wood Screws) as wood screws have a taper to them. I have several styles including Carbide counter sinks with regular style drill bits set in the center with an Allen set screw.

No ill feelings intended. I can misspell myself. |
