Testors has a series of washes called create fx. Has anybody used them?

Not all military models are weathered to death. And we have more then enough model railroaders who "weather" their equipment a bit on the heavy side too.

Haven't tried this product yet, but the bottoms of RR rolling stock, below the sill, are easily as weathered and dirty as anything you'd find on a tank or other military model.

As with any other kind of weathering, less is more.
