What is a layup track?

Dear TOs,
          In the planning stages for new layout i want to incoprate "park interlock" since it is close to home and very interesting. The blue print showes a layup track, how was this used, another blue print showes it not as a spur but connected.Info and advise greatly appreiated.    thanks  robert162

A track used for a set to clear the mains to change ends and go back the other way. The double end version would be to allow the locomotive to run around. The stub end is probably the later version for MU trains that did not need to run around..
