Close call !
Author: WrongWayMurphy

A couple HO guys were running my engine yesterday (that is them - I was on the rear of the train acting as brakeman)
and while switching an industry, they split the switch.  That is a sprung switch.  They were coming up the far side track and
ran the short hood end past the points of the switch which then snapped over to the nearside track , stopped to reverse direction,
then proceeded in reverse with the rear truck on the far side track and the front truck took the other route.

Fortunately they stopped just as the engine was going to derail, and eased it forward so that both trucks
returned to one track.  That engine weights about 600 lbs so rerailing would have been a chore.

This was at a 3 day switching meet near the DFW area, using car cards/waybills and three man crews, engineman, conductor, and brakeman.

The real railroads have rules about stopping, standing, starting and reversing on spring switches... <G>

How fast were they going in reverse to get that far before stopping?

You are absolutely right!  Trouble-maker is his first, middle, and last name!  He even fools around with Jolly Roger, and strange looking beasts.
