SD40T-2
Author: trainman502

Looking at things I can\'t afford on the Overland
website http://www.overlandmodels.com and
noticed that they are doing a run of SD40T-2.
4-D&RGW units 1-Cotton belt and 5-SP. Are these
10 models the only versions that were made or
were there others?.
Thanks for any information.
Brian

Overland in this new run is covering all classes in "as-delivered" condition of all SD40T-2s for SP, SSW and DRGW. Of course, over the years, many of these locomotives wound up on other railroads, including UP, NYSW, TRRA, Trona and a few others, and of course in the late 80s and early 90s most/all have lost their trademark gyralites and mars lights as well, so that\'s another important visual to make note of.

Cheers,
Harry

Not quite... OMI is doing several versions of the only three original owners but not all of the versions are of the "as delivered" configuration. The early version of DRGWs (5341 series) and the late SP speed lettering versions (both being done this round with ditch lights) are two examples of units not being done in the as-delivered configuration.

OMI did the UP ones last round (and they didn\'t sell that well) and did not get suffucient requests for any of the other later owners to justify their being done (and if you can\'t get just 10 people to want those other later roadnames in brass then the chances have to be fairly low that 5,000 people would want them in over $100 plastic - a number that would justify their production)...

Someday Athearn will upgrade their SD40T-2 (or drop it from production), but until then the other manufacturers are going to see it as a risky venture...

Allow me to clarify.. As-delivered means "as-delivered-from-the-factory". As I mentioned, Overland (OMI) in this set of production runs for SD40T-2\'s is covering only those SD40T-2s in the factory-delivered configurations as delivered from EMD.

1) DRGW 5341 series - Unlike what you have said, this is INDEED part of the first order of SD40T-2s ordered by the DRGW, and thus have the 81" nose and ratchet brake.

2) Also, SP SD40T-2s were never delivered from EMD with speed lettering, as the final order of SD40T-2s for SP/SSW were delivered in 1980, well before Speed lettering was ever applied to these particular locomotives as a *repaint*/reletter job during the early/mid 1990s.

3) Ditch lights were not commonly applied to locomotives until the FRA mandate in the early 1990s.. Also a not-as-delivered configuration.

Hope that helps!

Cheers,
Harry

This should have an 88" nose,, as well as the extended dynamic brake housing and exhaust silencer. If not.. then there\'s an issue with the OMI model.

8300-8306 should have only a full light package on the front end.. numerous other differences here too, between this and subsequent orders.

sounds good. 88" nose here.

This should also be an 88" nose.

Add exhaust silencer and extended bulge dynamic brake housing to this as well.

Herewith is a correction and retraction regarding my own post above! I see other versions now.. Most, but not all are as-delivered configurations on these Tunnel motors.

It\'s Monday! so please forgive me! =)

Re: SD40T-2

Harry, I guess now you see that my earlier posting was correct...

The SP SD40T-2 in speed lettering (with ditch lights) doesn\'t surprise me as it is a sharp unit. The 5341 series DRGW SD40T-2 including ditch lights in this run surprised me a bit at first until I remembered that the 5341 series were done without ditch lights in the last OMI DRGW SD40T-2 run in the mid 1990s...

Also there are a few omissions in the above listing of OMI tunnel motors. First is the SSW #9389 SD45T-2 in red, white and (unfortunately incorrect) blue (I think that was OMI #6381.1) in 1998... And at that same time OMI offered UP SD40T-2s (in two versions), a KCS SD45T-2 (in two numbers) and a UP SD45T-2 - all without original SP light packages and with ditch lights...

Ya, it doesn\'t surprise me either, since it is a re-run of omi catalog #6275.1 from their 1994 release. Same details, just a different road number. I wish they could have done something at least a little different since this is the only 90\'s era SP painted engine in the release. This is particularly disappointing because I have two of this model from the 1994 run, and I don\'t need a third, even if it will having working ditchlights (the 94 run had dummy ditch lights) and nicer windows...

you guys talking about brass differences are all too rich for my blood. I\'m enjoying the brass order details nit-picking like it will help me to purchase my non-existent brass locos on order!

No worries Ryan.. The new EMD 48" fans from Cannon & company will make your plastic kitbashes look WAY better than any $200/400/600/$900 brass model ever could!

I skipped all of the OMI tunnel motors, as I\'ve never been too big of a fan of Ajin\'s renditions of HT-C truck sideframes, nor of their dynamic or radiator fans, especially when one can "get there from here" when it comes to 40T-2s!

Like you, I\'m stickin with my plastic.. (i.e. the VISA card stays INSIDE my pocket on these!)

Cheers,
Harry

I\'m with you Tracktime and Espeeboy.

I\'m one of the biggest SP/SSW/DRGW Tunnel Motor fans around and not even $900 will get me to buy one of those babies! I\'ll take my chances with the Athearn Tunnel Motors I already have and hope that an Athearn/Genesis R-T-R version comes out someday in the future. Complete with see through grills even!

I just can\'t see running over $90,000 worth of engines!

Ouch! My wife would surely get rid of me! :)

So when are the Intermountain tunnel motors due out? My guess is that they will be as good looking as the brass units at below a third of the cost.

Re: Intermountain tunnel motors in HO
Author: BCM

Marty (of Intermountain) on the Atlas Forum has stated recently that they may not be doing HO versions for a number of reasons... Among the reasons was their inital plan to offer SD45-2s (in conjunction with the tunnel motors) and it looks as if Athearn will be offering those in the RTR line this year and may be upgrading their SD40T-2 as well. That would leave Intermountain directly competing with Athearn on two thirds of a very, very expensive (and thus very risky) project... And it sounded as if Intermountain was expecting competition (from someone not directly stated) on the SD45T-2 so the project has been shelved...
