Good for modern folks.  I got word that ScaleTrains is working on models for 70's and 80's fans.

Well the NS series was built in 1994 and the Conrail in 1997, so they are not all 21st century cars...

For those about to ask...  The new ScaleTrains car is the Thrall 286K coil car design later also produced by Trinity...   The already available Atlas master series coil car is the National Steel Car coil car also introduced in the mid-1990s as 286K cars.   The Red Caboose and Walthers coil cars are earlier designs of 1960s-1980s.

Neat looking cars but I'm surprised they are not doing any for Chicago and South Shore Freight. These are common trains from Chicago to elsewhere in the country.
CSS 1748 early version built by Thrall. Seen here in Burnham IL on 8/12/13
CSS 2108 late version built by Trinity. Seen here on BNSF HBRCGAL on the Belt Railway of Chicago on 12/3/17 (yes, December despite the green grass)

That's all I was told and no details. Will have to wait for them to announce. Still, nice to know!

I'm sure ScaleTrains has more than one run in mind...
CSS (2 schemes), Conrail (brown/white schemes), NS (other schemes including Horsehead), CSX (non-boxcar), UP, AOK, INLX, KCS, and SMW, plus probably a few more I missed, are still out there for the second and later runs.

I saw the cars at the show today and they looked amazing. Will probably have to order a couple. I was asking about SP -9’s and they are coming, eventually. So if there are paint schemes on the coil cars that didn’t show up this time, I would ask as there’s a chance it’s planned for a 2nd or 3rd release.

GRW, LW and CIGX are others seen westbound for CA on beanSF. Those cars look great!

CIGX has ex-CP and LW has ex-CSX which would be others that ScaleTrains could offer (but those delivered new to CIGX and LW were built by builders other than Thrall or Trinity).  All of the GRW E241 coil cars I can find photos of were FCA, Alstom or NSC built.

Here is the first set off freights cars we will be producing. The JAC/FCA Versacoil 5 trough Phase 1 starting in October. Attached is a photo of a 3D model of the first car. Model will include photo-etched walk ways, full brake system, our own Kadee couplers and scale trucks. Body will be diecast for proper weight and two styles of hoods. Phase 2 will be availble Winter of 2020

We are also working on the other coil cars mentioned for release next year. https://steelhorsemodels.com/versacoil-5-through-ph-1

Email shaun.teierle@steelhorsemodels.com for pre-ordering until or web store is up and running..

I know BNSF had a mass amount of coil cars, I'm guessing a different model than this SC one? I don't keep up with all of the different possible variations on every car...just too much details to worry about.

I figure a few each run, to pace out my wallet balance.

The 550+ BNSF coil cars delivered 1997/1998 (255 with hoods, 300 without) appear to be a different Trinity car that has lower/fishbelly center sill similar to the NSC built cars.
From what data I can find it looks like the only later deliverd BNSF coil cars were 15 from Alstom delivered in 2000.

The Rivet Counter series HO Bethlehem Steel F68AH Bulkhead Flat Cars will be in stock early next month (August).  These were first delivered in 1969 and some are still in service today.  Here's a link for more information.

Railroads began taking delivery of the Pullman-Standard 4785 Covered Hopper in the 1960s.  Several remain in service today.  The latest production run should be available later this week and is nearly sold out.

The 5750 Carbon Black Covered Hopper 1970s edition was manufactured by Thrall from 1977 to 1979 and numerous examples are still in service today.  They differ from the 1980s version Thrall 5750 Carbon Black Covered Hopper by the lack of two vertical ribs on each side of the car.  Our next production run is due this fall.

GATC introduced the 4180 Airslide Covered Hopper in 1963.  Production continued through 1980 and the design evolved through six iterations.  Several railroads are in stock now.

The larger 4566 capacity Airslide Covered Hopper joined the line-up in 1978.  This car is visually taller than the 4180.

Delivered in the late 1960s, the Kit Classics Evans 5100 RBL Boxcar was purchased by several private owners and railroads.  We're offering our best-selling roadnames and they should be in stock later this week.

We also have several locomotives appropriate for the 1970s and 1980s.

And those are the ones we know about! I have bought examples of most of the above or have pre-ordered those on the way. They are all top notch models! Kudos Shane!

Of course if there are any 70s items in the pipe as yet to be announced, I'm looking forward as well!

Cheers, Jim
