Model Railroading > GP7/GP9 Winterization Hatch DimensionsDate: 09/12/19 11:05 GP7/GP9 Winterization Hatch Dimensions Author: fltenwheeler Hi All
I am looking for dimensions of the winterization hatch used on GP7s and GP9s. I need to make one for a 1/8 scale project I am working on. Thanks Tim Date: 09/12/19 13:55 Re: GP7/GP9 Winterization Hatch Dimensions Author: wabash2800 Well, if you can't find dimenisons maybe you can just buy an HO one and multiply by 10.88? Of course, if you had a set of verneir calipers, that would help.

Using Victors method, my "O" scale model with 36" fans scales out to 59" x 43.5" x 12" with a 36" square exhaust screen. -LD Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/12/19 15:06 by LarryDoyle. Date: 09/12/19 14:50 Re: GP7/GP9 Winterization Hatch Dimensions Author: fltenwheeler wabash2800 Wrote:

But it looks to short. Where there different sizes used with the 36" fan? Tim Date: 09/12/19 14:51 Re: GP7/GP9 Winterization Hatch Dimensions Author: fltenwheeler LarryDoyle Wrote:

Tim Date: 09/12/19 15:39 Re: GP7/GP9 Winterization Hatch Dimensions Author: wabash2800 As an aside, I recall someone scrathbuidling one from styrene wiith it illustrated in one of the model train magazines some years ago. Sorry, I can't remember the prototype or if it was a project itself or part of a superdetailing project. I recall the modeler using a rectangular piece of plastic and folding the sides down--but the corners and edges were rounded.
Perhaps if there is one at a museum somewhere, someone can provide measurements and photos. Victor A. Baird http://www.erstwhilepublications.com Edited 3 time(s). ------------------------------------------------------- > Now, do you know what the winterization hatch does? It has a flap that can redirect warm air from one cooling fan back into the engine room. I remember seeing some NYC Geeps that had one cooling fan (the one closest to the cab) covered with a steel cap that neatly fit over the fan housing to accomplish the same thing. Here's a photo of one in PC paint (the corresponding radiator grill is also covered): https://www.railpictures.net/photo/266356/ Edited 3 time(s). Last edit at 09/12/19 20:24 by CPR_4000. The Details West hatch is a lot shorter than the one in the pictures.

I think the Details West hatch is meant for F units. Thanks Tim Posted from iPhone Date: 09/14/19 16:14 Re: GP7/GP9 Winterization Hatch Dimensions Author: highgreengraphics Alaska Railroad F's and many Canadian F's had two or at least two housings stacked on top of each other making them quite tall, I looked close on our two ex-Alaska FP's and one B-unit on the WYCO, and the roof curve was visible on both top and bottom housings so they were definitely two of the same stacked, each with their own controls. Though I knew what the winterization hatches were for, I never understood how two stacked improved their operation. === === = === JLH

It is 70" long by 46" wide and 12" high. The screened opening is 32" long by 27 1/2" wide I am sure your are aware that the GP7/early GP9 fans are 36" in diamater. Later GP9's only have 2 fans per radiator bank and are 48" in diameter. Howard Date: 09/16/19 14:46 Re: GP7/GP9 Winterization Hatch Dimensions Author: fltenwheeler Thank you very much. It just goes to show you that you should not trust another model.
