New for Trainfest: GATC 1957-Design 8000 Gallon Welded Tank Cars!
Author: TangentScaleModels

Live from TRAINFEST 2019 booth 2424, West Allis WI: Tangent Scale Models is proud to introduce our latest all-new HO scale freight car replica:  The General American 1957-Design 8000 Gallon Welded General Service Tank Car!  This all new model is the eighth (yes 8th) all-new General American tank car product in our ever-expanding tank car line.  Our model exhibits market-leading design and tooling practices, geared toward consumers who desire the most accurate models with a “family-appearance” between prototype railcars manufactured by the same builder.

During the 1950s, General American Transportation Company tank car production was in full swing utilizing the company’s “all-welded” tank car designs, produced at the company’s Sharon PA plant.  In 1957, GATC continued production of general service, non-insulated tank cars with safety platforms installed around the dome, however Sharon added extra sheet metal to the top portion of the tank body around the dome, giving it a “bulb” or raised appearance.  Also, there were other refinements to the design including a modernized handrail around the tank, larger tank manway handrail uprights, and side tank weldment mechanisms to secure the tank to the frame.

These tank cars remained in service into the 1990s and were utilized for a variety of services including corn syrup, caustic soda (sodium hydroxide), fatty acid, molasses, sodium chlorate, vinegar, fuel oil and other petroleum products, etc.  The “smooth” appearance of these common tanks with the safety platform makes them look very “modern,” and their design is similar to tank cars produced today.

The Tangent Scale Models General American 1957-Design 8,000 gallon welded general service tank car is a stunning model that includes the aforementioned “bulb” on the tank, plus a beautifully-rendered safety walkway and safety platform.  Our models include distinctive details matched to each paint scheme, such as inlet and safety valve details on the tank dome, outlet pipes underneath the car, and heater pipe details.  Also, note our correct “true-to-life” colors and “hyper-accurate” lettering including exact fonts and lettering placement.  Finally, our scale replicas operate as well as they look, equipped with free-rolling all-metal wheels, NMRA-conforming weight, and Kadee® scale couplers, meaning our models are truly ready to run.

Our November 2019 production of GATC 1957-Design 8,000 Gallon Welded General Service Tank Cars includes TWO RTR paint schemes, plus a fully assembled RTR painted undecorated car, and kits!  Check them out now at www.tangentscalemodels.com or live from our booth, number 2424, at Trainfest 2019!

As usual, all of our offerings below feature photos on our website showing the actual production models and the prototype cars!  Here are our schemes:

GATX Clinton Corn "Original 1958+" leads off in the classic Clinton Corn Processing, Clinton, Iowa scheme which was used for corn syrup shipments!  This car is resplendent in 1950s glory – silver tank body, black highlights, and black, red, and white stenciling.  It screams late 1950s and early 1960s if you know your tank car history!  Check out this model’s stunning graphics, including the very distinctive Clinton logo on the right side of the car in red!  This sharp car is available in 4 numbers!

GATX Black Lease 12-1974+ answers the call for the “plain black” GATX paint lease option for shippers (and model railroaders).  This scheme is for the modelers that understand that tank cars during the 1970s and 1980s included tanks from the 1950s.  We now offer you a “modern” paint scheme, and it is available in 4 numbers!

Undecorated RTR 1957+ provides a fully assembled car for those who want to exercise their modeling skills and finish their own.  This car is painted black, and ready for decals.  We are modelers at Tangent Scale Models – we get it.  Sometimes you just want to build a unique car for yourself.  Don’t miss out!

Undecorated Kit 1957+ provides a full kit for our all-new tank car, including the beautiful Tangent ASF cast steel truck with spring plank, separate brake beam, and CNC-machined 33” wheels.  This offering is for those of you who still relish the kit building process and “roll your own” aspects derived from building a kit from the ground up.

For those who need more 1950s to 1970s corn syrup cars...  Cool!

Did any of the prototype Clinton cars make it to ADM schemes?
I recall similar CPC International (CCLX) yellow cars in the 1970s and perhaps early 1980s.

I'm not sure if these are the same cars or not, but here are a couple of similar (?) CCLX cars that my dad photographed on the P&PU in Peoria, IL in 1980.

David, these cars look great!  Were these generally confined to corn syrup, or were they used in all sorts of services?  Fuel/oil at all?

Thanks!
