steam boiler pilot on GE 44 Tonners

I have only seen a few photos of such and they were all Canadian roads--likley home built modifications. They do indeed appear to be made from boiler tubes.

Has anyone seen that detail on GE 44 Tonners or other small diesels? I would like to add such a detail to my HO versions and everything I've seen so far is too large. Brass is OK, but I would prefer plastic.

Perhaps I should look at narrow gauge part suppliers? Or perhaps if I just want it below the coupler, I could cut it from an N scale steam pilot. But I don't think that will give me the boiler tube detail I want.

In this selection of Southern Railway locomotive shots, #1951, a 44-tonner, is included:

Interestingly, though the date is late, it still has a small boiler tube pilot which fills the gap between the foot-boards. I think it acquired the modification around 1950 when it was assigned to the light rail Cochran-Hawkinsville GA branch hauling at times a mixed train as well as branchline freights.

Thanks for the photo. That's what I'm talking about. Now, how to replicate that in HO...

Photos of that engine pulling the mixed train on that branch would be interesting.

Cut down a steam locomotive boiler tube pilot casting?  Cal-Scale has a one. Maybe others.

From the prototype photo above, I'd expect the Kadee coupler's glad hand to interfere. Some compromise is going to have to be made. Cut the glad hand, extended coupler, or a flatter version of the pilot.

Good luck!

I think I found something in my parts bin that will work. It will require some surgery and the brass casting is very delicate, but...

There's actually a film to video transfer out there, but I have not been able to find a link. I think it was from a commercial VHS tape.

The 44-tonner was in Southern's 1949 green scheme and was pulling a Southern steel 50' box converted to express service and a center baggage door combine.

The Rivarossi et al Twenties Heavyweight Coach is actually a model of Southern's 1909-1913 standard coach. Put a baggage door in the middle of both sides and you have Southern's "Jim Crow" car (or "three-way car" as the Southern called them).

I hope you have parts for both ends.

Yes, I ordered extras for that as have two units to detail and paint.  I'm am not interested in modeling the Southern mixed trains. I was inquiring about a part for my freelance road. My road, in theory, had been an interurban in the Midwest.

Yes I figured that you weren't into the Southern, but I threw in the details in case someone else might be. Call it marketing.

Also for lack of a picture, which I think you did express interest in seeing one, I was trying to convey a mental picture.

Check the guys who make street cars and interurban cars kits/parts.

TS1457:
Thanks so much for your link to the photo. And if any photos or videos show up for the Southern mixed, I'd love to see them. I am still waiting for some paint (scalecoat paint) and supplies from Minuteman. I'll be posting some photos here when I make progress.
