Draft Gear Box Cover for Locomotive and Rerail Frogs HO scale?
Author: wabash2800

I'm not sure if it is called a draft gear box cover, but I would like to add that detail to my GE 44 Tonner. As long as it is close enough, it doesn't have to be for a GE 44 Tonner. I'll be using Kadee couplers (with the trips pins cut off.)

Does someone offer this detail seperately in HO?

Also, I need rerail frogs but just want to set them on the deck. Can I purchase ones with hangers and cut off the hanger attachments?

Your Kadee coupler box will be your draft gear box cover and what kind of rerail frog are you planning to use? There are several types available.

I'm not sure about the rerail frogs as just have seen them on the deck of some of these units. I don't really want to hang them, as they likely will get in the way on sharp curves. I was hoping for something more detailed than Kadee for the draft gear.

Use the Kadee box as your base and add some styrene pieces and NBW castings as you see fit to make your draft gear. You can detail it as much as you want to.
IIRC Precision Scale has seperate rerail frogs available.

Also, Details West and Bowser make a number if different style of rerail frogs. Do you have any pics of what your looking for?

Here are a couple of examples of rerail frogs:  two on an SW1 and one on a 44 Tonner. I would think that they would be on the walkway side without access to the cab to avoid walking over them to enter the cab. Are those hooks on the frame that would normally be used to hang the rerail frogs?

The Southern loco has the frogs on the cab door entry end. The other is not. So your good either way :-)
