Selling Ho scale models
Author: Txtrainman60

Would anyone happen to know of a decent website (Other than E-bay) for selling models? I have a Rapido Ho scale Hi-nosed Southern B36-7 and an Athearn genesis GP49-X I'm trying to sell at what I would think is a very good price! Both are cumstom weathered and neither have been run.

This one seems to be working for folks, plus a techy explanation:

HO swap group

https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?3,5077091

https://groups.io/g/HOswap

+ Groups  io also has a number of interesting Historical and model building related discussion groups.

trainman60,

You can try the Classifieds here on Trainorders or try HO Yard Sale on group.io

I've already looked at that website and don't have a month to figure out HOW to use it. That has to be one of the most UN-user friendly websites I have ever run across. I guess I'll just keep what I have.

It is an email group.  Once you join you simply send an email to the group address and it is sent to the other members.  Just like Yahoogroups used to be.

It's not un-user friendly; you just are unfamiliar with it.  I've been selling on HOSwap for years.  If you are in a hurry, go use Ebay.

H O swap group is the way to go.  take a minute to understand it and then apply for membership which they will grant to you.

I agree.  It's been good in my experience.

Basically you apply and join.  You advertise items for sale - a good detailed description and it helps to include photo's and you be sure to post your name, which is required.  If anyone is interested in items you are offering, they contact you and you arrange acceptable payment (usually PayPal or US Postal Money order) and when payment is received you ship out according to the agreed shipping.  You can only advertise the same item once every two weeks if not sold.  I think you can advertise again in less than two weeks if you drop the price a certain percentage - I forget what the percentage is.  I usually include shipping method.  I offer USPS to buyers zip code.  I notify with tracking when parcel is away.  I've found to post new items for sale, I have to go to the website and post from there.  You can also choose to receive messages of what is offered individually or in groups.

Why pay the fee's when you don't have to?

OK, that makes sense.  But, I believe that you reach SUCH a wider audience with eBay that you can almost always get a better price.  So many older guys just sitting around right now, mostly unaffected financially by the virus, they're just scanning the eBay listings, looking for something to buy.

Whien you add ebay's commission, and now sales taxes, and the paypal fee (paypal soon to be gone) it adds up to a bunch of money.  Not like it used to be when ebay was not money hungry.

I tried that too. I guess nobody pays attention to classifieds on this site. I'm already offering  a GOOD price on these two. I'm not just giving them away!

I have successfully sold items on TrainOrders classified section.  IMO, the best approach is to list in a few different places.  If I have D&RGW related items I will list on the Rio Grande io.groups, on HOSwap and here, for example.

Prices are down. I was offered 50 cents per foot for LGB brass (used--weathered) by a hobby shop for resale..  It will go scrap for that.

I've had pretty consistent success selling local-interest items through my local hobby dealers consignment case.  With his 25% consignment cut, I'm not getting rich but I'm not getting skinned either. He keeps any eye on the stuff,  there are no shipping and handling fees, and he pays off at the end of the month.

Paypal is not going to be "gone" from Ebay, it will still be a payment option.
