NYSW 104 50' Box by Accurail?
Author: pal77

I have searched for images to get a start on weathering and rust on this model, I cannot seem to find a prototype depction anywhere.  So did this car actually exist or is it a foobie?  Thanks in advance both model and railroad are work in progress so...   either way its a neat looking car and will stay once completed.

No photos in the usual places of anything with that number, or even in that number series. Sometimes the "Accu" in Accurail is a bit of a stretch.

HOLD THE PRESSES! There is a photo of #104 on the Fallen Flag site (rr-fallenflags.org)! Looks to have a 1-79 "New" date.

The Official Railway Equipment Register for 4/86 lists only one car for NYSW with a three-place number; 526 is a 40' boxcar.  Numbering for other cars starts at 5959. Certainly raises some questions. A '76 ORER has only 40-foot boxes, but none in the 4xx range.

Our club tries to get the home road cars close to right, anything else not so much, but we're more oriented to operations and RPM-quality rolling stock.

I do recall seeing these type boxcars with NYSW reporting marks on the NYSW years ago, but can't recall their number series.

They are legit but the Accurail model is not 100% accurate.  I can try to dig up in my workshop the issue of "The Atlas Modeler" that had an article on the prototype. They were Mexican-built by CNCF. There was an article in RailModel Journal in their IPD boxcar series about the cars and how to convert the McKean/Front Range ACF boxcar into a CNCF car. There wasn't much of the difference other than a small sidesill modification to make it a straight sidesill..
Aha,  p. 94 of "Incentive Per Diem Color Guide" by James Kinkaid has a picture of #115.   NYSW received the cars in January 1979, numbered 100-142.   5,000 cuft. I'm not sure how long they stayed on the roster after Delaware Otsego took over the line in 1980.

Looks like NYS&W bought ~40 of these cars built by NdeM in Jan '79. George Ellwoods's Fallen Flags site has a dozen or so pix, including detail shots. The Accurail boxcar doesn't match the prototype, but the lettering matches fairly well.

Thank you all for your responses, yep Fallen Flags has good shots of this exact car and others, can't believe I didn't look there.  Even decent detail shots from some good old friends.  Mark this under getmo category good enough to move on!

The box cars i am familiar with was painted in a green darker then the NYC.In addition they had large figure of a lady in  a skirt holding a lit lantern. She was called "Susie Q" the nick name for the RR.

They weren't interested in flashy paint schemes at the time; they were in bankruptcy and trying to avoid abandonment. IPD cars provided income. They even had deals with other IPD shortlines to have their cars assigned to them for loading and, I believe, got a cut of the IPD money. (Another article to dig up.)

Guess it is because I am old (81) but I hate cars without a railroad name and herald on them.   No pride.

Those were 40 footers.

The 100-series 40-footers were retired.  Afterward, new 50-footers were obtained and received 100-series numbers.

But how long did they last on the NYSW, if the '86 ORER has no reference to them?

Still there in my '82 ORER. I'm guessing when the IPD rates were withdrawn, they were returned to the lessor.

If I dig through my old issues of The Short Line, I might narrow down the date between '82 and '86. I'm sure a Susie Q expert could figure this out in two minutes.
