Late in the day, passing the mine
Author: railstiesballast

The afternoon light is fading as the DRGW 5371 rolls past the mine loadout at Klien on my Southwestern Pacific.
This is an Athearn "Tunnel Motor" that I weathered to match the many photos of the prototype that James Belmont (Grand Gold) posted here on TO.
It ended up being the last unpatched DRGW unit and was donated to the Ogden, Utah, museum where you can see it today.

Here is D&RGW 5371  7/12/92 Walenburg, CO. Shot by me. A bit dirtier.  Bruce

Nice picture and scene.

Thanks for that 1992 image, that sort of sets the date for when they went to ditch lights.
Most of Belmonts photos were around Helper, it was much cleaner and it had ditch lights like I modeled.

Those Rio Grande Tunnel motors look right at home with early ninty's SP.  Neat scene and weathering.

Great thread, glad it was preserved in Ogden.  Can't remember who did the presentation at the Salt Lake NMRA convention back in 2019, but it was part of the co-hosted DRGW Historical Society and there were a lot of photos of 5371 in Helper, might have been it's final run.

The lighting on that shot is as realistic as it gets - very nice scene.

The first photo in the post shows 5371 as it appeared circa 2004 when it was operating out of Helper, UT on the dirt train.
All covered in great detail in the book Last of a Breed by Mike Danneman.
