They make wooden barrels or casks for distilleries and wineries.

Would cooperage extend to wooden crates, blocking, etc., or is it restricted to barrels and casks?

Thanks TAW. I thought that there was a railroad meaning like that, but I was not confident enough to say.

Merriam-Webster says it is recoup. TAW has the meaning correct, but the proper spelling would not apply to cooperages. TAW also has a lifetime of RR experience that I lack so that may well have been how it used in the workplace. Just don't use recoop spelling in your masters thesis.

I would expect firms whose names refer to cooperage could well have branched out into other forms of crates and packaging -- just as Teamsters no longer routinely drive teams of horses.

My dad was lead OS&D clerk at Montgy. Ward in Chicago. I saw it a lot.

Whiskey is aged in new oak barrels, that's what give it a full bodied flavor.  The picture shows barrels that have been used once for whiskey, and now are to be used for aging scotch - that's what makes scotch a lighter flavored and lighter colored beverage..

I think Cooperage is the paper with metal straps that is attached to the inside of boxcars over the grain doors to keep wheat, milo etc small grains from leakin out of the boxcar.  upkpfan
