SP Toledo Hauler
Author: funnelfan

I was eager to try out the new TCS UWT-50P throttle I recieved earlier in the week on the River City Modeler's layout in Spokane. Decided to bring down equipment to recreate the SP Toledo Hauler that ran from Eugene to Toledo, OR hauling woodchips to the Georgia Pacific Paper Mill and returning with rolls of paper and bundles of paper bags (handled in the larger 60' Hi-Cube cars). Here are a few photos of the train coming off the Keystone Branch and running around the layout.

Steep grades (1.40% going to Toledo, 2.58% coming back) required a lot of locomotives and slugs like the SP TEBU (Tractive Effort Booster Units) to cross the Coast Range Mtns. SP had a series of GP40-2's and GP40R's setup as mother units to the slugs MK rebuilt from U25B's. The GP40-2's here are the Atlas Master units and the TEBU is a Atlas U28B frame with a resin shell.

Nice train, layout and photos!  Are the SD9E's P2K's?

Great looking layout and so are your engines.

Can't go wrong with classic SP!  I never saw much 4-axle in the Sacramento area except the odd GP9 that serviced the Hunt Wesson tomato factory in north Davis.

Love the photo's!  As a kid who grew up in Eugene, this is near and dear to my heart!

By the way, what did you think of the controller?  I've got a Wireless Pro Cab, and have thought about replacing it with one of those from time to time...

Great looking Layout and Train. The crew knows how to model Sawmills, nice additions since I was there a few years ago.

I went to Humboldt State University in Arcata CA.  My understanding was there were a bunch of pulp mills there.  Anyone know what kind of rail traffic there was in the 80's to those pulp mills?
