Seems to get the propper solder contact on wire would take too much heat and destroy ever what the covering material is made of. In other words a cold solder joint. Why not just use heat shrink instead as then wire is heated enought to bond with the solder. Granted that low temp solder would be effected by too much current going through it, but that's the attraction behind the design.
