Model Railroading > Reminder: Rapido in San Diego TONIGHT! (March 22)

Hi everyone,

This is a quick reminder that Craig, Jordan, Jeremy and I will be doing a meet & greet courtesy of the La Mesa club and the San Diego Model Railroad Museum TONIGHT (Wednesday March 22) at 7 pm. 

Everyone is welcome! We will show some pictures and videos and then do a no-holds-barred Q&A about Rapido, the hobby, and maybe Star Trek! (I hope... but no spoilers!)

Admission is free and it's worth every penny!

They're baaaaAACK!

I'm sure that'll be a fun group to have a visit with and bring their SP boxcars. Perhaps there is another prototype out there in Cali that they will be checking out for a model down the road???

Being an SP fan from my early years as an Airforce brat in northern California, I'm really looking forward to these PC&F SSW/SP B-70 boxcars.  I hope the rolling charactaristics of the trucks are improved as well.

Another military brat? I was an Army Brat. I was envious of Air Force Brats as you usually lived in more exotic places. The best my dad could do was Germany a couple of times and all over the eastern and southern United States.

Actually you got more exotic than me!  I lived in all US locations (born in San Antonio TX, then Bunker Hill AFB in north of Indianapolis, then Massechusetts. My dad was stationed in Korat Thailand and moved us to Hawaii but we ended up moving back to San Fernando Valley 2 weeks later because they didn't like the schools nor the lizards that inhabited the house we were renting!  Last location was Travis AFB and that's how I ended up in the Davis Sacramento area until I finally moved out-of-state to finish college in Indiana.  The nomatic lifestyle I've lived was not good for the hobby however!  (I did travel to Germany and other European countries while married to my first wife so I did get a bit of that in - even Yugoslavia!)

Just be glad your dad wasn't in SAC. You could have spent your childhood in lovely places like Minot, ND, Marquette, MI or Limestone, ME.

He was in SAC (Strategic Airlift Command) during the his first two navigation assignments, the first a KC 97, a propellor driven tanker, and then the KC 135, jet tanker based on the Boeing 707 airframe.  My memory doesn't go back to his years in the KC 97 but he was stationed at Bunker Hill AFB (renamed Grissom later) located in Puru Indiana, while assigned to KC 135's.  He did do TDY regularly away for 7 to 10 days and flew through Alaska, the Asores and refueled B 58's and B52's.  He mentioned they orbited outside Soviet airspace at the time with reduntant crews so they could have an exteneded orbit ready to go in and drop nukes.  I assume that practice lasted until the ICBMs replaced them, along with subs.

The 3rd aircraft was the EC 121 which he was assigned while at Korat Thailand in 1967 - not sure if that was still SAC.  After that he was MAC (Military Airlift Command) aboard C 133's and lastly C 141's.  If he would have been in longer he would have bene nav aboard C 5As.  I think they were transporting helecoptors over for the Vietnam war.  Interesting times.

My dad is one of the guys holding the sign (on the left).  He passed away in 2020.  BTW,  A fellow Air Force guy he roomed with in Thailand is a member of Train Orders - KenN (he pm'd me and confirmed he flew with my dad during that year).

Ditto that.  But we'd get nothing done talking Star Trek!  I do hope to see that museum one day and run trains.
