New Big-Boy from Kato
Author: ApproachCircuit

A real beauty and you know Kato does things right. Just released. Wow.
And you can pick one up for 377 Euros at Modellbahn Kramm
The price is right!
They are advertised as analog, maybe a digital version will follow.

HO?   N?

It's N scale.  It looks pretty good on the Kato website, but things like the plastic looking handrails and lettering font look off (or photoshopped in).  Hopefully that's a pre-production sample shown. I understand the need to navigate curves, but it's a little frustrating that the plastic manufacturers (HO & N) articulate the rear set of drivers as well.  It would be nice if they let the modeler lock the rear set...this is one area where the brass versions prevail.  Overall it looks like the usual very nice Kato model.

Broadway's is far better.  Kato needs to move out of the stone age.

Broadway's has sound, now smoke, a capacitor, Dual DC and DCC, wireless transmission to a subwoofer if desired and detail that matches or exceeds the Kato. All of that for approximately $90 more than the DC only Kato version in average hobby shop pricing I've seen online.

Whimsical "smoke"? That "smoke" looks nothing like steam or anything prototypical, leaves residue everywhere, and generally smells horrible. I really don't understand how people can even make that a selling point.

There's an off function for it, so no one is required to use it.  It's just one of about half a dozen better features over the Kato unit.

Does anyone even want smoke in N Scale?  The residue would amplify any electrical conductivity problems on neighboring tracks due to the small size/gauge.

The first question that should be asked about these models are they accurate when compared to the real UP 4000s and not just the 4014.

According to many here, Broadway Limited has quality control issues. And they are often selling "refurbished" locomotives.
