Tangent BN Cabeese
Author: M-420

Like many others, I jumped on the Tangent BN caboose train when they became available - mine arrived today. These really are very nice cars. I am very pleased. They will soon get a trip through the weathering shop, but they already look terrific on the layout.
Who can blame this guy for taking a quick break to watch this beautiful car roll by his place?

PS - the lighting is very nice.

My SP&S is pretty sweet as well. I appreciated effort to simulate the overspray onto the roof. I've tried to match it, but it never came out a subtle as Tangent's job. This is one of the best overspray jobs I've seen.

The wand to control the lights is a much better solution that the Genesis decoders, and much simpler to use. Although I wish they hadn't put that long slot in the foam. The wand just falls down and is hard to get out. I've left mine just laying on the foam.

This is one of the finest purchases I've made in a number of years.

My three arrived today, representing three different eras of the BN. I don't recall how many different eras of cabooses were offered in the inital run, but it must have been a record! My three Atlas stand ins will be joining the for sale lot.

Those cabooses look really nice and tempting even though I don't think I could use any.  I sure hope Tangent will offer the D&RGW Extended Vision cabooses that D&RGW ordered in the 1966 production run.  A variety of versions could be offered from as-delivered to the orange repaints and post early 80's blanked out side windows etc.

Cheers,
Jim

I will second your motion for the DRGW extended vision in mutiple eras, Jim. If Tangent did that and some multiple era late 60s to early 80s MP all my caboose needs would be met. Going to get a few of the origional and early 80s BN on payday. Late 60s MP across eastern Colorado is what I plan to model along with early to mid 80s featuring DRGW run thru trackage rights trains and a few BN detour trains (due to major unspecified service interuption on the Denver to Lincoln line or the old FW&D thru Amarillo).                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     John

If I remember correctly, D&RGW got trackages rights east from Pueblo CO which prompted them to buy the used "smurf" GP40's to handle the traffic around 1983 and later.  Modeling the Front Range between Denver and Pueblo certainly opens up a lot of variety to model as well or adding in eastern Colorado.  I kind of fell for the dsert scenery west of Grande Junction which is what I will be shooting for.  I'm not sure if BN cabooes ran across the system but I might pick one up "just because" from Tangnet.  But yeah, I'm really hoping Tangent offers the D&RGW and the BN parts may share some components making it eiseier to offer. But I am not sure about common components.

Cheers,
Jim

As a caboose fan, it's sure great to see all these fantastic new releases hit the market lately.

BN cabeese on the Rio Grande did happen.  Firstly, as part of their trackage rights over the Moffat Route due to the UP/MP/WP merger.  Second, when BN took the contract for the Coleto Creek Coal trains, BN cabooses began running south from Denver to Pueblo and onto the BN, tagging along behind at first five BN units and the 105 loads of coal.  This was done to avoind yarding the trian in Pueblo.  Could a BN caboose make it west of Denver on a 707/708 train. possibly if not probably.  I did not get to see one, but I can almost feel secure in saying yes, it did happen.  I welcome someone showing us a photo of that happening!

Hi, I'm still on the fence with ordering any of these cabs! What does the Red/Green lights indicate on some of the cabs?
Thank you.
