In-N-Out Burger, how do you like your Double-Double?
Author: MrMRL

A fellow train club member recently purchased a 3D printed HO scale kit of a modern In-N-Out Burger. The model (produced by The Railroad Connection) is only 15 or so large pieces, including the various main walls, roof, and awnings. Being 3D printed, be prepared that some of the angles do come in a bit rough or coarse, but after paint and detailing it still becomes an impressive structure. Here's where we are after a couple weekends of assembly and paint. Just finished cutting and installing some clear .005 styrene for the windows.

My last meal... 3x3, Protien Style, Whole Grilled Onion, Ketchup & Mustard instead of spread. Well-done animal fries, no spread, XL Root-beer float (root-beer + vanilla milkshake)

I don't know what a 3x3 is, but give me two single cheese burgers with onions and hold those nasty fries! :-)

Pretty nice model.

Classic! You MUST include at least two of the 4 "Big W" palm trees on the property. The "Big W" from the 1963 movie "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" were, I read somewhere, the inspiration for the palm tree theme.

Founder Harry Snyder was a big Mad Mad World fan and so started putting in the Big W palms at his stores.

Very nice. You'll need a long line of automobiles for the drive thru too.

Timely post, I just had a double double on my way up from PHX on I-17.

Love, love, love those burgers. Double-double with grilled onions and I'm happy.

We've got the iconic palm trees ready to go, courtesy of JTT's amazing selection. The photo is from a week or so back before we had painted the sign, and tweaked a few other details.

And for folks (basically east of the Rockies) unfamiliar with In-N-Out... their burgers are traditionally Hamburger, Cheese-Burger, Double-Double (two beef patties, two slices of cheese). Off the menu but also available are any combination of meat and cheese up to 4 of each. So a 3x3 called "three by three" would be three grilled beef patties and three slices of cheese stacked one atop the other.

Historically there was no real limit to the number of beef patties and cheese one could have on their burger, until it became an internet obsession. Sometime in the mid 2000s after a group of youngsters ordered a 100x100 at a Las Vegas, NV In-N-Out (yeah, Google it, it really happened), In-N-Out corporate put the kibosh on anything over a 4x4. Sometime in summer 2004 or 2005, I ordered and successfully ate a 5x5 "animal style". It was obviously good, but never again.

Double double is 2 meat patties, 2 slides of cheese. 3x3 is 3 of each. By the time you get a 4x4, might as well get two double-doubles. Here is an unofficial hidden menu of items you can purchase.

They add a squirt of mustard sauce to each side of the beef patty(s) while grilling on the flat-top. Just kicks up the zing/tang factor over the fresh beef patty(s).

Now I'm hungry!  Great looking model.  And I always loved "the big W" in "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World".  That, and the airplane flying through the billboard makes it one of the best movies ever for me.  Here in Northern Utah, we don't have the crossed palm trees at our In-n-Out locations, but the one down in St George has them.  I can't order the 2x4 like I used to, I don't even get the Double-Double very often - getting old is for the birds!

Thanks, sounds interesting. I am looking forward to when I have a chance to try an In-N-Out Burger meal.

We're not lucky enough to have any here in MO.  It would be a refreshing change from the same old same old.
I'm disappointed that I don't see jalapenos or banana pepper as add ons.

Excellent modeling, thanks for posting.  The lower shot was taken at the Wailai Country Club in Honolulu and is from the movie "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World."  Stanley Kramer wanted to make the ultimate slapstick comedy.  The critics hated it, but I thought it was funny, and I've seen it several times.

In-N-Out is an absolute TREASURE of a company and most of us out west, who are fortunate to have them close by, realize just how special the company is, whenever we might visit one of their restaurants.  The young woman who inherited the company has turned out to be an extremely kind, generous and caring person, who takes care of her employees.  She is currently a billionaire and has turned down numerous offers to sell the company.  She could have opened locations all over the USA and throughout the world, but is expanding slowly, making sure that the supply chain for the absolutely fresh, high quality ingredients needed is in place, before moving forward.

If you don't have In-N-Out where you live, but ever see one while traveling, if you love a great burger, amazing fries and shakes made with real ice cream, that are priced AMAZINGLY low, make sure you treat yourself.  The spotless restaurants, with spotless restrooms, staffed by fresh faced, well groomed, smiling young people, who actually speak clearly and politely are a true, national treasure, in my humble opinion.

A friend of mine was married to Lindsey for a while and have a kid together. Have worked on her race cars. Very good organization to work for.

Looking good Robbie. I concur with the long line of cars waiting being a needed detail. Maybe you can figure out how mimick the aroma that is alwats present in the area surrounding one.

Good food, but the long lines and waits have become something to weigh whether I want to eat there.  I'm surrounded by several In-N-Out locations, but the only times I attempt to eat there in recent years are when they first open at 10:30am, and maybe around 3pm if I still haven't had lunch.

But I suppose that's a good problem to have for In-N-Out.  People come in, empty their pockets, consume and leave happy.  (See Michael Keaton as Ray Kroc in the movie 'The Founder' for a similar line when he has a revelation about fast food after visiting his first McDonald's, when he was a traveling milkshake mixer salesman).
