According to Pacific Fruit Express by Anthony Thompson, Robert Church, and Bruce Jones, the R-40-27 and -28 cars were lettered when built in the in the 1952 scheme used on the R-40-26, which had orange sides, boxcar red roofs and ends, and black and white heralds.  Not until April 1962 were the painting instructions revised to black ends and aluminum roof paint for ice cars.  By then the PFE "Gothic" paint scheme, adopted in April 1960, was specified for repainted ice cars.  The boxcar red roofs and ends remained until April 1962.  I'd prefer my dozen non-Gothic scheme R-40-27s with boxcar red roofs and ends please.  (Modeling PRR Pittsburgh Produce Terminal.  Have assembled 70 intermountain steel-sided ice bunker reefer kits.  Have waited for R-40-26, -27 or -28s for a long time!)  Thank you!

Two reasons for me to drive down to Norwalk CA.
1) See the SP equipment your doing (especially the Cadillacs)
2) Hear that Detroit Deisel bus! They were a bad ass diesel back in my early mechanic days... They sound cool!

I sure miss these fishbowls. And the other buses from that era.
When you could see and ride any model. And can hear each one growling.
When they got up to speed. The Buses today are too boring. Specially since
we are now down to two or three Bus Manufactures.

Regarding the end and roof color, we worked with Dick Harley who co-authored the SP Paint and Lettering book with Tony. Since teh book came out Dick has had new information that led us to go with the colors that we have. Below is the information that Didck posted to one fo eth SP modeling groups on this subject recently:
"Yes, the conventional wisdom was that red ends and roofs were applied to all new PFE steel ice reefers. I even mostly wrote that in the SPH&TS painting & lettering book.  But upon further investigation of the R-40-27 class, the photos of near new cars showed the roof and ends to be of different colors. And, the color photos showed the ends to be black. As additional evidence, I obtained a copy of the PFE 74-Q spec for the R-40-27 class, and it says asphalt coatings and does not mention anything being freight car red.So, the R-40-26 class was the last PFE class to receive FC Red ends and roofs when new.  The R-40-27, R-40-28 and R-40-23 Ice Tempco cars all received black ends and a version of aluminum asphalt coating on the roof when new.As for repaints, there are photos of repainted R-40-26 and older class cars with Black ends and Aluminum roofs before 1962.  Nearly all repaints were done at Tucson at that time, and ice and mechanical cars were sometimes intermixed.  Rather than always keeping track of which cars should be FC Red and which should be Black & Aluminum, the shop folks sometimes just used the more current scheme on all cars.  That probably influenced PFE to abandon FC Red ends and roof in 1962."

Then it looks like it will be a dozen R-40-27s with black ends and silver roofs!  That'll offer some variety from all the other PFE's in my fleet.  Thank you.
